I am routinely blown away by the sheer volume of the average 20th century American landfill. These refuse mountains which dot the landscape around metropolitan areas, county seats, and manufacturing sites must contain a significant quantity of recoverable natural resources.
Prior to the recycling revolution aluminum cans, lead-acid batteries, oil filters, mercury thermometers - you name it - was merely dumped.
Could we differentially mine these locations to recover enough non-biodegradable materials in such a way that our dependence on first line raw materials was further reduced?
