Grow Black Elderberries to rid the world of colds and flu.

Something in the juice prevents viral infection of mucus membranes. Elderberries are used by Native American medicine people to "strengthen the inner warrior" Too much provokes allergies.
Protocol: Gargle with 1 cc/ml twice a day AND rinse the sinuses with a sterile saline to which 1 drop of juice has been added to 500 ml. This level of use will prevent infections without raising the immune system into reactive allergic levels. Thanks to the 150 volunteers of various immune levels who helped me reach this protocol and have kept me cold and flu free for six months despite my emphysema

  • Oct 27 2011: Show me the documentation of the peer-reviewed randomized double-blind trials of the magical "something" preventing viral infection and I will be interested.

Otherwise this is just another bogus homeopathic alternative medicine that does not require FDA approval/regulation.

Oct 28 2011: What do you expect from "peer-reviewed randomized double-blind trials"?

Most of the time they're done by the company that makes profit from selling the stuff. And when not it's no guarantee either.

Here in Holland there were proofs for vaccinations against the flu.
Vulnerable people and those above 60 years are vaccinated for years now. Then new studies proof that there isn't any effect at all.

Maybe you better believe your own judgments.

For years I worked in a rather unhealthy place. Every year I've got a flu worse than the year before. Since I left the place I was never ill again.

So we better look to our environment for improvements than to medicines of any kind.

Oct 29 2011: It delights me to see people exhibiting such FAITH in the researchers who apply the scientific method, given that a recent study published in the Public Library of Science (PLoS) found that 2/3 of the ones polled could identify at least one colleague who had falsified data.

I actually track studies - many on what you undoubtedly consider "woo" like the beneficial properties of plants - and cranberry juice at least manages to inhibit the development of biofilm, a stage in bacterial infection.

I do not have sufficient knowledge of elderberries to comment directly, but odds are unless someone is going to benefit from their study, no one is going to fund it.

As much as you may not like it, your faith in scientists - not science itself - is probably misplaced a goodly percentage of the time.
  • Oct 29 2011: Didn't bother to do that, just want to be as virus free as possible as quickly as possible. Elderberries grow to 30 feet in two years in the Bay Area, so new supplies are very quickly available. Extract of the juice costs about $25 for enough to keep a flight attendant or preschool teacher, etc... free of colds for a month. I have no stock in manufacturers like Gaia or Eclectic Collection [no alcohol], but used them in testing. It's worth it to me to be virus free. I am an emphysemic and cannot keep this a secret. I can't really monetize it. I can imagine quite a number of products using Sambuca, but don't have the capital to do that. I am working on autoimmune disease problems, having lost my mother to Scleroderma and friends to ALS, I am close to a number of people with a variety of autoimmune conditions. Besides, mosquitoes spread viruses by blood.
  • Oct 29 2011: I used 150 people of varied immune systems, including myself. I did promise them anonymity.
I really don't know if I have peers-I am the Chuckpa medico and a forensic anthropologist. I know how to run a double-blind trial and how to avoid the placebo effect when testing a protocol. I feel that the looming virus season called for the release of this simple remedy. I grow Elderberries and other medicines, native and otherwise. Native Americans have used Sambuca nigra to "strengthen the inner warrior" for millenia. I don't remember where I heard that there was something in the juice that prevents viruses from infecting mucus membranes. I didn't even Google it, just ran with the idea of being able to fight back against a social disease we all suffer from. This will not eliminate viral infections, after all, mosquitoes are still spreading malaria as well.

Oct 28 2011: as this 'Something' is currently unavailiable i suggest you pursue to find out what it is/ if it exists, patent a medicine and become stupidly rich from a cure to the cold. good luck.
