Oct 27 2011: Like all technologies it can be used for good and for ill. It certainly makes the world a smaller place, making it much easier to maintain contact with people across the globe, rather in the same way that TED makes it easier to have global discussions. And if people are in a position which limits their direct social contact, social media can reduce the isolation.

I have recent experience of having limited mobility in a hospital in a country where I spoke very little of the language. Being able to keep in touch with friends and family through social media on my phone kept me in a much more positive frame of mind.

Oct 27 2011: Not to be trite, but on an individual basis, I think it depends on the person and their motivation. Positive people will use it for for a beneficial purpose, and negative people will use it create havoc. On a more global basis, I think the jury is still out. For every positive benefit Facebook creates, I think there are likely just as many horror stories (if not more) to recount. Good vs. Evil? The story is still unfolding...
