Where did the inspiration to add a x to TED come from?

TEDx is the independently organized TED events. A friend of mine suggests that the TED staff added an "x" because the x variable on a coordinates grid is an independant variable. I think it's just because the x makes it sound cool. Does anyone know which one of us is right? I'd appreciate if you could link me to where you got the answer. Thanks for the answers!
