Facebook has applied to become a PAC, Can information put on FB be used to target political ads to users and influence the 2012 election?
Facebook has announced they will begin streaming news stories, and has just announced it's intent to become a political action committee. With the information people put on FB about themselves, their interests, likes and dislikes, etc., it seems to follow that FB can run an ad campaign that is modified and targeted for each individual. Such a campaign could be very successful in pursuading voters (especially young voters) that their vote should go to a certain candidate.
I would be interested in hearing from sociologists, psychologists, advertising personnel, behaviorial specialists, and persons familiar with pursuading individuals or groups of individuals to act in a specific way.
I remember from a college course that if you controlled the information someone received, you could control what they thought and how they acted.
