How to stop texting while cell phone is in motion. This would lead to a decline in accidents while driving and walking.

By using the GPS function available on all smart phones it is possible to detect when a cell phone is in motion. If the cell is in motion, the texting function could be disabled.

Sep 23 2011: If only you could tell when someone was texting from the passenger seat or a bus. The problem with these kind of technological "solutions" is that they remove a sensible person's ability to use their own judgement in order to protect us from a handful of fools. There always seems to be unintended consequences. I'll take a world with a little more danger over one where my phone makes these kind of choices for me any day.

The GPS could be use to measure speed and possibly kick in automatically at certain speeds. Also if all cell phone carriers did have this you could put laws in place such as it is required for all persons under 18, or those that have had accidents while using a cell phone. The technology is available it is merely a question of demand. The technology is not limited to smart phones.

Sep 23 2011: This is a great suggestion. In Canada using a cell phone without a blue tooth while driving is against the law. Texting too is illegal in such circumstances. I wonder though if it is fair to disable the device if a person is not the driver or simply the passenger of a train or subway for example?

Sep 23 2011: Thats a great idea but Im thinking they would have to make the feature optional by law. Wich means if someone was into texting and driving could just turn it off. Although for teenagers who do not own their vehicles the parents could make it mandatory.
