There are 2 types of people in this world: those who ________________ and those who _____________________.

Curious to see how the TED community takes the billions of people from different backgrounds, cultures, etc.of the world and condenses it down to 2 types. Maybe we aren't so different after all...

  • Aug 30 2011: those who believe that there are only two types of people in the world and those who don't

Aug 31 2011: There is only one type of person in the world: living.

    Everything else is a detail.

Aug 31 2011: There's 7 billion types of people in this world..
  • Aug 31 2011: Those who stay safely behind the protective fence and those that walk to the edge, just to take it all in.
  • Aug 31 2011: There are 10 types of people in the world. Those that know binary and those that don't.
    • thumb
      Aug 31 2011: That's very funny.

Aug 31 2011: One Type: Those ... Who...

Those who have love, need love. And those who need love, have love.

Those who have breath, need breath. And those who need breath, have breath.

Those who have compassion, need compassion. And those who need compassion, have compassion.

Those who have truth, need truth. And those who need truth, have truth.

Those who have peace, need peace. And those who need peace, have peace.

Those who have wisdom, need wisdom. And those who need wisdom, have wisdom.

Those who give, take. And those who take, give.

Those who have love, need love. And those who need love, have love.
      • Aug 31 2011: I agree whole heartedly and enjoyed this response Thomas!! I believe you would have contributed well to a conversation I created, now closed, regarding DUALITY of all things or as Joe Delsen said in the conversation what he calls it is the Paradox Principle, I may include what you have written here for my closing statement!!

        http://www.ted.com/conversations/4635/what_role_does_the_duality_of.html

Where I come from on what I said here, all though everyone has and needs love is that when we make judgements on someone, in that moment the only judgment that matters is whether we are willing to go beyond our reactions and offer a loving response versus a negative one...

“ … Rebellion is a knot of the heart, not of the mind. The key is to make deposits – constant deposits of unconditional love.” Stephen Covey (Seven Habits of Highly Successful People)

          Sep 5 2011: Thanks Birdia - I am fine.

Sure you can assume to be free. That is fine but in reality the word freedom is not compatible to civilisation or any culture.
      • thumb
Sep 4 2011: May I respectfully disagree Ehis. Freedom is not being without want, it is not being without need, it is not being with out those in control over us. It is a state of mind, a choice, a way of living. It is how we choose to see the world. We can choose to see it as the world tells us to see it, or we can choose our own way of seeing it. Freedom is the instant I make that choice and accept the consequences of that choice. I wish I could remember the authors name but he chose freedom in the midst of a Nazi Prison camp during WWII and lived to write books about it. We choose each moment to be free or not. As Birdia says she is living her life her way and that my dear brother is freedom at the essence.

Sep 4 2011: Very well put, James, and I agree with you completely.
        • thumb
Sep 5 2011: @ James Turner - You said "Freedom [. ..] is not being without those in control over us". This is funny because i use to think freedom is immunity from any obligation or control. Or, rather unrestricted use of something. How do you reconcile that with being controlled by something of any kind? There is no freedom of action my friend - no matter how you justify that delusion.

You talked about state of mind, choice, and a particular way of living. Your choices have to go through a filter of norms, government laws and social standard. Your state of mind is nothing but a making of your environment. And a particular " way of living" fit more with confinement than unrestricted use of action.

But like the Nazi Prisoner - you can accept the option and delude yourself as free - but in reality we are cultural and organized prisoners.

Sep 5 2011: You said “If I have any rule to live by, this is it: All the knowledge . . . ..." that’s not true. You must live by the RULE of the land or you find yourself in a ‘smaller confinement’. If you disobey the RULE of the land in an extreme way – you can lose your life. And you think you are free.

Birdia, you gave answers to a wrong question. You are allowed to choose from the acceptable options of swimming, climbing mountains or eating any food of your choice is a different thing completely from saying you are totally free to do whatever you like. In other words - you have absolute freedom. I hope you get me.

Aug 31 2011: The people of our world are all very much the same, but to condense "us" into "two types" seems very limiting. Our personas are developed with many different factors...love and needing love...those who make good use of time...or not...live in harmony with nature...or not...those who are wise, confused, optimists, pessimists, those who give, and those who take...those who are free...or not...
What "type" we are may be a combination of many factors.

I agree with Thomas and Tom...
There is only one "type"...living. And if we have forgotten who and what we are, we may be alive, but we are not really living.
  • Aug 30 2011: Those who have forgotten, and those who haveremembered

Sep 4 2011: I guess my idea is more to do with people in your personal life, than the general public.

I think the two kinds of people are; those who are cages (ones that keep you stationary and constrain you from growing and developing into the person you desire to be) and there are those who are elevators (those who influence and encourage you to grow and develop to become the best being you aspire to be).
  • thumb
Sep 2 2011: Those who think others to be SMALL ad Those who think others to be GREAT !
This is only the difference in our society...

Sep 1 2011: According to Clint Eastwood as Blondie in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly":
"You see in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig."
  • Aug 31 2011: There are two types of people in this world. Those who watch TED and those who don't. This is as good a division as any other.

Aug 30 2011: Those who give and those who take.
  • thumb
Sep 5 2011: Actually three; those who make things happen- 1%, those who watch things happen- 10 %, and those who wonder what happened-89%
To answer your question; those who love and those who don't.

Sep 2 2011: Those who need division and those who don't and just accept others for what they are (not into which category they seem to be)! After all there are way too many stereotypes and cultural differences!
  • Sep 2 2011: There are 2 types of people in this world: those who want to really achieve their dreams and never give up on them and those who give up so soon sometimes without even trying.

After all in our world today we see many success stories of people who only had a dream and somehow someway they were able to achieve it which made me believe that no dream is impossible in our world but it all depends on how bad do you want it and how hard are you willing to work towards achieving it.

Sep 2 2011: There are 2 types of people in this world: Those who share "Share their experiences" and those who "Learn from others".
and neither of these two people are bad, the fact that they both need each other is whats interesting.
    • thumb
Sep 4 2011: Really? People can't be both in different contexts?

I'd say I do both depending on the situation - and sometimes within the same situation.
      • thumb
Sep 4 2011: I agree with you, i didnt phrase my statement correctly. One person can have both qualities, but it only differes when the person learning does not share the experience (this is what I did not state clearly). But thank you for your comment.
  • Aug 31 2011: Ha. If you reason out if this is true, you ask yourself: "What did I forget?" You can't know that, so you didn't forget, unless you remembered. Therefore, every forgetter remembers, so there is only one type of person in the world.
