Sep 2 2011: "The Japanese haiku and the English language haiku have several critical differences. In Japanese the haiku is composed of 17 sound units divided into three parts - one with 5 units, one with 7 units and another with 5 units. Since sound units are much shorter than English syllables, it has been found that following the Japanese example results in a much longer poem often filled up to make the count with unnecessary words." Wiki

Not in the mood for writing a hiaku write now- lol- but I thought the above description would help others that do. :-)
    • thumb
Sep 3 2011: @Estela thanks for your reference

Only poetic talent in own language usually doesn't help one to write even normal poetry in other language. While what I understood from posts here Haiku is specific to Japanese. Most languages (if not all) has got their own individual rythm , lyric, symbolism etc etc , which are key for poetry, so some languagge has got specific form of poetry which are even difficult to translate in other language keeping its soul intact.

Haiku seems special form of poetry in Japanese , as RUBAI in persian (not saying that it's impossible to write in other language)

You are not in mood , I lack the talent so not writing HAIKU .....:)

Sep 9 2011: I very much agree with you.

Now having said that, there is an excellent translation of Baudelaire's poetry book, 'Les Fleurs du mal.' I just can't remember who did it that's all. lol

Seriously though, I was able to appreciate Charles Baudelaire's talent even in English. I have a feeling the reason that is so is because English and French are both Romantic languages?

You make a very valid point, Salim.
        • thumb
          Sep 9 2011: Hi Estela
I read and have Baudelaire Bengali version (my language)'les Fleur du mal" translated by one of our talented poet of 30s, but felt I couldn't get the real essence of great Baudelaire. May be I will try the English as you reffered.

You know Bengali is a very romantic as well mystic laguage also :). The power of its alphabets (11 vowels and 39 consonents) made it more versatile than English at least (well it's my naive opinion). The wealth of synonyms are great as well (I am pretty novice about English so not comparing just telling what my language have )...... some of those are very specific to situation to be used...........

          Thanks for your compliments
        • thumb
          Sep 10 2011: Estela,
English is not a Romantic Language. It's roots are, in fact, of Germanic descent.
The five Romantic Languages are: Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish, and Romanian.
But when well translated, Baudelaire can be appreciated in any language ; )

Sorry this is not a Haiku Austin

      • thumb
Sep 4 2011: Thanks Autumn for your help :)
Yes that's the form used in Haiku that I understood from your post and also from the link of WIKI given by Thomas Brucia below :)
From where could learn , other than the use of syllable in particular style, thematically it should also contain "KIRU' & "KIGO' to be a true Haiku which seems to me very specific to japanese language and culture........
Even words and syllable of different language may be a challenge as well.
Really enjoying this learning about an interesting form of poetry.

Not being a poet , I might be a bit conservative about the purity of poetry ...so not trying yet to write one......lol
