if a child fails in school who is to blame? the parent, student or teacher?

It's only a matter on opinion. When I reading Tiger Mother Chua stated that an Asian parent would always side with the teacher if their child isn't doing well. Western parents are more likely to rebel against the school.

    All of the above, and other reasons can be a cause of failure at school...
    - Disinterest of the parents in their child's education
    - Too crowded classes
    - Bad teachers
    - Child's stupidity, lack of concentration, motivation, illness or accident, too easy (child is bored),...
    - Bullies (being successful in school is not always appreciated by peers)
    - Bad education system (lacking pedagogy, wrong educational program,...)
    - ... (there are other reasons I assume)

    I do think that, on average, the stereotype you describe is correct. Though historically, two generations ago, parents did listen and agreed to what teachers said, at least in Belgium (and per extenso Western Europe guess)...

    Aug 26 2011: I just had this conversation the other day, I think if a child fails in school it's kind of the fault of the parent. Let me explain, I was having this conversation with a teacher and he was saying how he had a 4th grade student who he would drill with multiplication. While at school, the student would understand the material, they would do multiplication tables and etc and the child was pretty confident with it. However, when the child went back home that wasn't reinforced because the parent didn't help the child with it. So everyday when the kid would come back to school it was kind of like they had to start all over again re-teaching the child it was even the same with cussing he said. I guess thats why I think it's the parents fault, a teacher and school can only do so much the parent has to reinforce all of that as well.

    Who decides what is measured? For what purpose?

    What form does assessment take that best benefits the advancement of the learner's skill-base and knowledge?

    Or is assessment a government tool for the purposes of administration?

    A parent instills more in their nonchalant attitudes than 1000 teachers can hope for in their purposeful instruction.

        Aug 30 2011: More explicit I would state that standardized test prove nothing at all about what a child can accomplish. It only tells something about the shortcomings of the school system.

    Aug 25 2011: I hope that you can understand that the child can never been blamed if it fails school.
    There are different kinds of learning and also different kinds of children. You can train children like you do your dog or the workelephant and that was called learning in in my parents days and often still exist in Asian countries. Training often lacks any respect for the child while there is in the world no other creature that wants to learn so badly.
    If children are given due respect and love they will learn a manifold than they could otherwise. Given though that you provide the circumstances and opportunities to learn and follow the talents and character natural to any child.
    The same goes for animals as well as we often see nowadays.

    Aug 30 2011: well, I think one fails in school doesn't mean everything, there is no standard for winning or losing. But of course on some level parents and teachers are responsible for education of children, it's just that they have their own limits, maybe they weren't taught well for their own, and this is the policy that should be to blame.
    If one keep learning at every phase of his life, we can't say that he's a failure.

    Because the school, the parent, the kid, the teacher are all false in the monetary system.

    Of course someone will say a kid can never be false but just think of the toys we buy them they are pure reflection of the materialistic world that we live in. We are just creating new consumers and teach them greed from the swing. 'cause the only efficient quality of today's world is greed.

  • Aug 25 2011: I think its a case by case issue, sometimes its the parent, some times its the student, sometimes the teacher, some times the school as a whole and some times a combination of some or all of them.

    Aug 25 2011: It is the system, always the system: the way parents children teachers administrators and rule makers interact and influence each other and communicate. Individuals are (we could argue about the point) seldom totally isolated in their environment and never live without some 'system' around them. When tuberculosis becomes an epidemic, we blame the public health system. When teenage crime increases we blame the system. When politicians become corrupt we blame the system that allowed it. The examples are endless.... why should we approach the education of children differently?
