Is internet addiction really an issue ?

I came across IAD (Internet Addiction Disorders) which I thought it is worth discussing with TED community.

Do we honestly give enough time to our family or internet ? Is IAD really an issue ? Is overuse of interet on rise ?

What can be done to keep it balanced with our family life & internet.

Aug 16 2011: It definitely is an addiction... I have to admit I have a bit of a problem going too long without checking my emails or my Facebook account or TED.

I'm not sure if anything can be done about it, as all addictions it needs a fair amount of will from the person that has it to overcome the addiction. Perhaps emphasizing these dangers in schools more often would be good and even more importantly parents need to notice the danger of such disorders as well. Delete your kid's WOW account if you must, but you're responsible for him wasting time on the net as well.

Aug 16 2011: If we are talking about spending more time online than offline yes it is. I know people who only have virtual friends and only involved in cyber virtual relationships. It is destroying human interaction because most of virtual relationships are lack of quality due to fewness of sharing.

Aug 17 2011: for starters we should all agree that it is an addiction that threatens our society. then we can debate on what action to take. for me regulations and restrictions will come out useless int his case. we should focus on education.
