A car that doesn't starts its engine if the driver cant pass on board alcohol-test will reduce car accidents and related deaths.

It is simple as it is said. The car manufacturers, who build super genius cars with all dvds, stereos, back view cameras, etc will attach a simple and cheap alcohol meter to the dashboard and before the driver starts the engine he/should have pass the test to run the car... I am not buying the ideas like '' state controls the citizen'' ''assault on privacy'' because even the most educated people among us still drive drunk and kill innocents.

We also need devices that prevent the car from moving if the IQ of the driver is too low, and when the driver's attention span or emotional state interferes with his/her driving ability. I work in the road maintenance industry and fully 50% of sober drivers shouldn't be on the road, they are a hazard to themselves and everyone else.

Driving is a priviledge not a right, and if you can't ce courteous and attentive while behind the wheel then take public transit.

Aug 11 2011: There are devices that exist like this already. In Texas DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) recipients are mandated to put them in their vehicle in some instances. Exactly what Christopher suggested as workarounds does already happen.

One built in though would be making a broad statement.

Aug 12 2011: good then maybe there should be lobbies to ensure them becoming a standard regulation instead of accessory just like airbags.

Aug 11 2011: Great idea. Thumbs up. In relation to Christopher's comment, to prevent the bartender to blow into it, we can add to this system an optical recognition system. I guess it makes it a perfect system... and probably will result in a decrease on car thefts.

There will always be a work around.

Aug 12 2011: Trust me Christian , if it happens I will be the first one to try those shortcuts and then report back to traffic board how they can prevent these manipulations.
