If you could only give your children one piece of advice in life, what would it be?

Given the journey you have been on what would you really tell your children that would be of some use to them in life?

Feb 21 2011: Understand life has stages. When you become an adult you must learn to be autonomous and take care of yourself. After that, you must develop your personal mastery. When you have done both of those, you will be ready to find your highest purpose and take your place leading in the world. Go slow, but do not stop. Life is about finding and living your purpose.

Feb 21 2011: Having my father as my angel, and although he's not here with us anymore... his spirit and best advices he used to pass around, will always guide me through life... He was a man who walked the talk! Always in good energy, with a sense of humor even when situations were not 'so funny'.. always smiling from his heart, loving ALL people, ALL things, PASSIONATE about LIFE in general, like never seen anyone or anything like that before!! A true inspiration to whomever he came across!!

Therefore, yes ''follow your heart'' is one of the greatest thing you can teach someone, for I have really seen and lived that as well... but it really does take a good heart in the first place in order to do that ... So, anything that you do, any path that you may follow or lead, go with a GOOD heart on, always!!

Few of my favorite quotes to also live by:

'' Be the change you wish to see in the world.'' ~ Gandhi

” Where there is great love, there are always miracles ” ~ Willa Sibert Cather

” You can be happy if you know this secret: Some things are within your power to control and some things are not. ” ~ Epictetus

'' We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.'' ~ Winston Churchill

'' It is what I am, not what I do, that is valuable about me.'' ~ Bernard Shaw

'' Laugh more for it is the music to your soul. '' ~ Linda Taylor

    Feb 21 2011: Dear Jaden:

As you grow through life, you may find yourself confronting a mask – a false self – that is given to you. You may also have seen your true self who came to life as You Are.

You get to choose which self you believe.

Now, I can’t promise that being your true Self will make you better looking.

But I guarantee you will feel fulfilled.

You will know that being “as you are” is good enough and worthy of love.

Instead of striving after what you should want, go after what you DO want.

Instead of always about “lining up your ducks in a row”, jump into the pond and frolic with the ducks.

    It can be fun.

    And remember:

In your darkest moments – the light in your heart always shows the way.

    Love,
    Mom

Mar 6 2011: I don't have children but if I did, I would tell them: Do what you love, be passionate about what you do, be compassionate and generous with others, be flexible and open-minded and find your happiness so you can share it to the ones around you.

Mar 4 2011: I tell my children everyday that I love them. I am starting to try and teach my 14 year old daughter some of the things which I have learned to be important in my life. Honour and integrity are what allow us to sleep well at night. Anger and and aggression only serve to defeat your dreams. Dream big and don't worry what others think.

The one piece of advice I would give her is 'Be true to yourself and follow your heart live a life of passion.'

Thank you all for your amazing thoughts.

Feb 21 2011: There are so many FABULOUS pieces of advice to embrace in this thread.

Linda Taylor, I love your dad (or maybe his spirit at this point).

Jane Chin, I love your mom:>)

Feb 22 2011: You are absolutely right colleen, as a parent I am touched by the replies this strand has generated. I think the piece of advice I would give my children is 'Go and ask the Tedsters'

Feb 22 2011: Tedsters are a GREAT resource. Your kids will have much more fun hearing it from you!
And as important as hearing it, they need to see it and feel it from us as well. An important piece of the parenting puzzle is to walk our talk, in addition to saying the lines huh?
Be what we want to see:>)

Feb 21 2011: I think the most important piece of advice I gave my children, and continue to give anyone who is searching for something, is "follow your heart". Be open to information, do your homework, investigate, explore, and then listen to, and follow your heart.

I agree with Steve in that it is beneficial to understand the stages of life, develop personal mastery, find your highest purpose, go slow, but do not stop, life is about finding and living your purpose. And I believe that listening to the heart, after we have explored all information, can lead to the insightful advice Steve has provided:>)

Feb 21 2011: If something bothers you in life, change it instead of constantly complaining about it. But before you do, make sure you understand why it is functioning the way it is. Then, spend time focusing on how you can make it better.
