What constitutes an addiction?

The word "addictive" is being used in a "positive" way in modern marketing and sales to push products and services that are very engaging. They can grab our attention, and keep us coming back for more.

Now of course these examples of addictions are trivial, but they do make me wonder what really constitutes an addiction. At a high level, is there a common thread found in all addictive behaviour? And if so, what is the root cause of it?

Jul 17 2011: Some of us can be trapped in the wrong belief of our own selves and wrong opinion of others about our own selves and when we sustain this by an inordinate time we indulge in certains things that we do that are not helpful, then it's a bad addiction and we need to break out of it.

What I believe is the root cause is the design of our hearts to be loved truly and be truly happy. When we go out of this design then problem ensues such as addiction. http://Bit.Ly/KeyPower
