What if everyone believed that they could change the world?

I know most people think that what can one person do to change the whole world unless that one person had extraordinary characteristics. But what if everyone believed that they could change the world in some small way. All of those small changes would make a big change in the world.

  • Jul 17 2011: Hi Rohan,
yes, i believe that we can only really change ourselves. However, it seems there are a lot of change agents out in the world right now... I'm one of them, and i'm trying to make it more accessible for others, who do not believe they could change the world... of course alone it would be hard.... we have to work at this one together....

thats our job, to make everyone you know 'believe' they could change the world... if people believe in God... why not??
you just have to create some small miracles to demonstrate how to do it...

Jul 16 2011: I think that we would be more successful if everybody was to think that everybody else could change the world as this would set a trend of following people on the ideas with the belief in change for the better.

Jul 16 2011: Even if everybody on this planet believes she/he could change the world, if they don't act on this belief, nothing will change.
Usually, the problem is not the lack of belief. I think everybody believes that using your car less would contribute to less pollution. I also think it's obvious to most people that 1000 people driving less is better than 10 people. Yet, the problem is the lack of proper action.

Jul 16 2011: Hmm yes this is a very interesting debate. I've often wondered how me saving water or electricity is effecting the world. And to be honest i don't know if that really makes a difference. But what i do think makes a difference is like you said when we act on our highest motivations, there is a field that begins to form around us, that creates others to act in the same way we are acting. So in that sense we are actually changing the world.

Jul 16 2011: Hi Rohan, think about it this way:
What do you think influences a person more a) somebody with a good idea or b) somebody who has a good idea and actually applies this idea, hence giving an example ?
Gandhi already said: "Be the change that you want to see in the world."

Jul 17 2011: Rohan, we do have the power to transform our world. It's solutions 4 and 5 of our the overall solution strategies we are all trying to implement. It's what we are doing here at TED.

Jul 18 2011: This is great Joe. I think we are living in a time of great transformation potentially. Evolution is becoming conscious of itself through us. And we have to get into the driver's seat, so to speak, and guide the process ourselves.
