Jul 14 2011: If you've checked this conversation (and possibly the links) please put a comment or a thumbs-up here, even if you have "nothing to say" just to let me/us know that awareness is being spread!

    Thank you!
  • Jul 13 2011: Unfortunately this is traditional in far too many countries, with children as young as 8 years. These marriages are even upheld in courts of law. It is an outrage. Often these marriages are arranged by the fathers, and even protestations from the mothers carry no weight, because the fathers are deemed the legal guardian. It is a unconscionable practice but thankfully it is getting more exposure and more people are speaking up. It is a blight on humanity as long is it persists.

Jul 13 2011: I'll just share a part of NG's story since many of you won't take the time to press the link...

" "What happened in this village has given me strong feelings," he said. "There was a girl here. Ayesha is her name." The Prophet Muhammad's youngest wife was also named Ayesha, but this was not of interest to our Mohammed just now. He was extremely angry. "She is 10 years old," he said. "Very tiny. The man she married is 50 years old, with a big belly, like so." Spreading his arm around him, he indicated massive girth. "Like a rat getting married to an elephant.""
