What do people think of the approach of TEDCredits calculation not being transparent

I've seen a number of approaches to using points systems (gaming dynamics) and obivously this is something that has an incredible power in terms of motivating people and getting people involved.

TEDCredits is the first I've seen that doesn't have transparency into how you gain the points. I think this is an interesting approach. In one way this is good because it creates a level of mystery that keeps people coming back, on the flip side it's counter to some of the core principles of gaming dynamics that show people how and what to do in order to gain points.

I was just interested to know if anyone else had any opinions on the approach that TED has chosen.

Thanks,
Chris

Jul 4 2011: TEDCredit is not important, but it is obviously flawed. For months I've been trailing at 37+ . Since then I've accumulated more than 25 points in comments, but they are never added to those 37+ . In my profile I'm at 40+, but you don't see that in comments.

It's not important, though. TED does this with a good purpose: to encourage you to do something more productive with your time. When you have reached almost 40, you should become a translator or a financial contributor, instead of just watching videos and commenting.

    It's not a bad policy.
