What does community look like in the 21st century?

What does community look like in the 21st century? What does it mean? Is it important? If so, more or less important than it was 15, 25, 50 years ago? What is it made of? How big is it? What is it?How do we shape it? How does it shape us?
The list of ways which we can look at community is endless. What do we see when we look at community from all of these angles?

    Jun 15 2011: We have certainly seen the rise of the digital community which can span most demographic and geographic borders. I imagine online communities will bring nations of people closer together, hopefully ushering in a more peaceful wold if not a more connected one.

    Along with the development of digital communities has come this passive idea of open communities where everyone is allowed in to share. It is a great environment to boost the understanding of difficulties, movements and the triumphs of humanity.
