Space Exploration really Needed?

The United States federal government should substantially increase its exploration and/or development of space beyond the Earth’s mesosphere.

Is space exploratioin really needed? Or will it benefit our society later in the future? Why or why not?

Jun 14 2011: The best way, the only way I can see, to ensure the survival of the species is by space colonization. So, yes exploration is crucial. Privatization is happening s that 's a plus but the government should still research. Especially when it comes to asteroids, detecting and if necessary diverting them.

Jun 15 2011: Great point Thomas. Governments do have a role for sure.
For example, where a lack of incentive exists for saving the world from asteroids.

Might also help to prevent a private company operating via decentralized network from taking over and controlling low Earth orbit? Muhaaahahaha!

    Jun 14 2011: Privatize it.

I read recently that the natural resources in an asteroid is enough to make space mining very profitable.
  • Jun 15 2011: I believe our survival as a species depends on Space Exploration.

The Earth will not always offer the entire human race a stable home... (Climate change or not)

Jun 15 2011: Some really smart folks are working on this: JUSTSAP and PIECES http://justsap.org/pisces

Although I don't actually agree with the morals and ethics of the programs with respect to local cultural issues, I do agree that this is the future of space exploration, space-based energy and the commercialization of space.

Jun 14 2011: no, but i like it

Jun 14 2011: Yes, but it should be privatized to be sure it's affordable. The U.S. Government for example is incapable of determining what is affordable on it's own. Just my humble opinion...
  • Jun 13 2011: Well not many things today are fantastic for our economy, but the money spent should be put onto knowledgable projects such as space exploration. This advancement could do wonders for our country, not only educational but also make us prosperous. Innovation is what we need to get us out of economic problems..

The govenment can only fund so much and for poverty I dont think should be a high prority because many Americans abuse the use of those services..

Jun 13 2011: I think its important for scientific reaserch, but economically its not good and there is a better things to spend money on. we have a big problems here to solve like global warming, povery, so i think its better to spend the money on this things first. space Exploration is not Necessary for now
