Why do we create organizations and systems (education) that mold children into complacent receptacles of fairly useless information?

What does a truly modern education look like? What should it look like? Students are are rarely asked to think outside of the box, challenge ideas or assumptions, create their own content, share or collaborate with others, or pursue their passions.

Schools continue to be content driven factories where one size fits all, and students are forced to conform to a system that at best was created for my parents - who are in their 70's.

We seem to be able to keep our military current, why not our schools?
