Is it possible that we will find life on other planets, and what environments would a carbon-based life form need to thrive on such planets?

I'm just wondering if we will find life on other planets in near years or is it a long shot?
Also what conditions would be possible for life to be sustained on other earth-like planets?
Please include a detailed answer, and yes jot notes work too.

May 1 2011: It is entirely possible. As far as conditions go I'm sure someone here would be able to answer that much better then I. Although there is also a chance that there are non-carbon based lifeforms. What they are or how to discover them is a whole other issue.
