Where are we ? and What is the shape of the universe

If I want to refer to any address I have to use other reference out side that address
to locate my home I have to use my street as a reference
to locate my city I have to use my country as a reference
to locate the Earth I have to use the Solar group as a reference
to locate Solar group I have to use our galaxy as a reference
to locate our galaxy I have to use other galaxies as a reference
to locate the Universe What should I use ??
second question
can we have a picture of the universe as we have for the earth ?

  • May 11 2011: Love this thought...drives me crazy. But it comes down to humans thinking they can understand everything...but our brains have limits, and understanding infinity is one of them.
Think of your question in reverse. Everything, including you is made up of atoms, which are made of electrons/protons, etc., which are made up of (do the research, i don't know)
There are theories that there is a final level, but how can that be? Everything is made of something, regardless of whether the human can 'find' it or 'see' it, it's there. To infinity.
    So infinity both ways.
This is why I believe in the multiverse theory, in both directions actually.
  • May 9 2011: IMHO:
If the universe is everything that exists then location & picture are pointless. There can be no location relative to external entities if there are none, and a picture of a room is not a picture of a house.
If the multiverse hypothesis is true and the universe is re-defined as "that which was produced by the big bang" then our universe has both, but the multiverse doesn't.
    I think.
    Peace

May 22 2011: by logic every physical object is covered by something
      earth is covered by atmosphere
its very hard to imagine there is nothing at the edge of the universe
  • Apr 25 2011: Since we do not really know much about the Universe, whether it is finite or not, whether there is anything outside of it then we cannot really determine its "location" if that even make sense.
  • Apr 25 2011: By definition the Universe is everything. Locating it, therefore, is impossible because it's not within anything; in order for it to be within something that something would be of the universe.

As for a picture of the Universe, perhaps an interesting question would be whether a picture of it would help us understand it!
