Why is it that against all odds we still hope? Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

I think the question's quite simple. Whether in cases of unrequitted love, illness, failure, etc...we sometimes convince ourselves that this sadness, grief, helplessness will not be forever. I'd like to know your thoughts about hope. :)

Jan 10 2014: We always need something to motivate us. To keep us moving, trying to reach a target, fighting etc.
As we know, not everything deserves our trying, but we need to pay this hope in somewhere. (like the heat produced in your body and you have to get rid of it.)
And ... It is a really good thing. If you never think about it again, so lose your faith to your non-logical hope. In other words, this hope is even more important than the logic itself!
