African American (AA) Ancestral Obligation is the key to development of grit to motivate AA at risk youth to finish high school.
African American Ancestral Obligation and Grit: Thomas Duval DDS, MPH
African American (AA) adults and children must know and appreciate their AA history and culture to develop positive self esteem. AA adults must teach and impart ancestral obligation guilt (responsibility) to the next generation. Ancestral Obligation is the key to development of true grit to at risk AA youth. We must teach our AA children they have an Ancestral Obligation to get an education because of all the hardships their ancestors endured for them to have an opportunity for a free public education. To not be focused, or misbehave in school, or perform poorly in school is unacceptable disrespect of your ancestors. This is what we must teach our AA children to make them want to learn. This is what we must teach middle class high achieving AA youth to motivate them to give back to their respective communities. This is the educational strategy that will produce the exponential improvement our country desperately needs!
