Using drones to carry out supplies and provide help.

I know this has probably been thought of before, but the question resides in when will it happen?
Its easy to see how far we've gone, just look at the video. Its amazing. I see drones such as these and the Parrot 2.0 and wonder why they arent putting them to use?
Sure, Amazon has their drone program to deliver goods, so does Pizza Hut in the UK, but when will the drones actually be used to carry medical supplies from base to base or villiage in Africa? When will they be used to find survivors in earthquakes and tsunamis?
I understand that certain things are too heavy to carry, but drones are capable of amazing things, and these are only the ones weve seen!

Im sure governments have programs to design drones, but basically for espionage (naturally). They SHOULD make a program to develop drones and technology to HELP people, to SAVE people. There are drones with WiFi, radio, 1080p cameras, and drones like these, but surely there is much more being made behind the curtain.
Other robots are being designed to help in situations such as the ones mentioned, but none have really been seen in action, though they have proved their capabilities.

I believe there must be a technological development program made by an organization with support by robotics, aviation and technological organizations to develop and provide drones to support people in need around the world.

Well evidently the problem is the government, and the problem is violence, and the problem is terrorism, and the problems are lies and conspiracies... end so on, all leading towards the government. But we cannot adress that problem, since that usually ends up being the root of all bad things happening in our world, from wars to global warming. And guess what: were far away from changing ANY government. Why? because they are in total control. They know, they see, they plan, they lie, theyre secretive, theyre a lot of things, except backing off. And yes, i know. Power to the people, we are the 99%, a government is nothing without its people, the ants outnumber the queen, etc. Thats a huge topic and i understand and thnks you for your participation, but this thread is for what technology can do now, even with the problems and barriers the government and other obstacles create.

    In regards to Jason:
I totally agree with what you're saying, we just need proof. Where have you seen that they are used? any source? im sure many are in the works, but i dont see anything happening.
Anyways that last sentence was true ad great. Sadly it reminds me of I, Robot by Asimov, but oh well, we are what we make. Hopefully we soon see these drones in action, because there is always a disaster somewhere.

There should be a drone force specifically for certiain situatins and under controll of the UN or the UNICEF or something.
  • Dec 10 2013: Until we address the insanity issue in humans almost any system for our benefit will have a high failure rate. We live in a world where firemen and police are fired upon for sport. We live in a world where little children are massacred in their class room. We live in a world where a seemingly nice and just country massacred 500,000 Iraqi men, women and children for their oil. We live in a world where several completely innocent families are blown into thousands of little pieces of flesh, blood and bones just because a bad guy was close by or just by mistake...opps. We live in a world were "none" of us is safe even in our own countries from our own government. We live in a world where the government is creating more viruses that anyone else to infect our computers, phones, websites, blogs and steal our personal information.

What we really need is for the government to BACK OFF! Then we can use technology to help mankind in many ways, drones included.

Well after reading what you have said it is probably a bad idea to put drones to the risk of being captured, especially by people like terrorists or pirates.

As to who can make the drones, i agree, the military definitely wouldnt help, but maybe private companies would, or maybe something like the UN global security.

On the topic of disasters, i do believe it is convenient to use drones in that area, especially in the searching for survivors and getting supplies to them while they are rescued, since drones arent close to carrying humans yet.

There are motorbikers in Isreal and Palestine (theres a TED video) who deliver supplies and medicine and medical attention to people who call for the ambulance. THese people are volunteers and they keep the person alive until the ambulance gets there. I think a similar system should be used wth drones. They find survivors and help them until better help arrives.

Dec 8 2013: I do believe the technology to the use of drones as you just mentioned is avaliable to the goverment. As For the reason to not pursue this path, all I can think about is that the main goal for what drones are build for (at least for the goverment) is military operations and put it to use in social and/or rescue mission endangers the safety of the drones and the technological advantage that it represents to the army.

The only way, as I see it, for the use of drones in areas no related directly to military operations is that the drones built by the public sector (private companies) could be superior to those developed by the army and therefore this private developed drones could be put to used, among other things, for the carrying of goods to areas struck by a natural desaster or the search of missing persons in dificult terrains (just identification, as I do not see a drone carrying a person any time soon).
  • Dec 8 2013: About me, i think drones are a good idea because it's easy to enter difficult to place with them. It is more environmentally friendly. But these drones will be easily Trappable, they can not deliver everything.
In many countries, there are stupid people who are capable of destroying drones to see what they were carrying.
And build armored drones would be too expensive.
So I don't know if this is possible.

On refueling in countries affected by tsunamis or earthquakes, I think it is a good idea because in this case people are affected by the events.

Today drones are not yet developed enough but we will in the future if this type of technology will be used.
