Do you think that even though its morally wrong, what NSA as been doing was good for our countries?

Peter King, a fellow Republican congressman, said that Mr Obama should not apologise for NSA operations in Europe. “The president should stop apologising, stop being defensive,” he said on NBC’s Meet the Press. “The reality is the NSA has saved thousands of lives not just in the United States but in France, Germany and throughout Europe. Quite frankly, the NSA has done so much for our country and so much for the president, he’s the commander in chief. He should stand with the NSA.”

  • Oct 30 2013: The question requires a more complex cost-effect analysis than King suggests. Questions of morality always do. I personally believe that the ends never justify the means. It would be hard to prove, I think, that NSA spying was uniquely responsible for saving thousands of lives, though it may have been a factor. But what were the other circumstances? How many of those saved were doing inherently dangerous work that perhaps also did not need to be done or was morally/ethically problematic? The question of whether other countries are doing the same thing is also unconvincing. We can never justify immoral/unethical behavior by pointing to our enemies' behaviors, unless we wish to defeat them only to discover that we have become them in the process. The ways in which these activities have hurt us a s a nation are certainly clearer and more present than the ways they might have served us.

Oct 30 2013: There is a fine line between good and bad it can be crossed easily, so stay in limits.
  • Oct 30 2013: No I do not believe it is ever really good to do what the NSA does for any of any country. If something is so bad or amazing all of us should have the right to know about it and have a voice about what we would do for it.
  • Oct 30 2013: Don't expect to find rational people Everyone does this. The Chancellor of Germany is not so naive as to think her cell calls are secure. Kids can monitor this. Are we so naive?
In fact, this fact makes any intgersepted call of questionable value.
If Eisenhower had talked candidly about the U2 flights to Khrushev perhaps the cold war had ended much sooner. How could the President talk to the paranoid in his ouwn country? Doesn't everyone have that problem?
  • Oct 30 2013: Spying has been one of the political tool for gathering intelligence of the nation's enemies or suspected enemies.
But there should be limit on to what extent should we go through the length of spying on something, say, involving the PRIVATE LIVES OF THE LEADERS OF OUR ALLIES.
Forget about the efficacy of our spy bureau; NSA, how would we feel if some one is listening to the private conversations of President Obama or other government officials?
    • Oct 30 2013: I'm pretty sure everyone is trying, in fact. Some of them may even be succeeding.

Oct 30 2013: Spying is a tool that nations use to prevent being surprised by their competitors and enemies. Its a tool that has been in use for as long as there has been recorded history (and probably earlier); and its a grey area. What may be deemed acceptable to one party may be unacceptable to the other. Just because one party got really good at it, everyone is calling foul".
  • Oct 29 2013: First rule of spying is don't get caught.
The rest of the list is out for lunch, and may never be back.

Everyone spies on everyone, enemies, allies, civilian or military, the only difference it makes is priority in terms of resource allocation. C'est la vie. The trick is to get away with it.

In case you broke that one rule however, apologies may sometimes be in order to save face out of purely pragmatic reasons. Though personally, I suspect the NSA keeps right on spying on everyone while the politicians lie through their teeth with promises to stop.
Because again, that's just the way of these things. I'm not saying its a good system, I'm saying its here to stay, so we may as well learn to live with it.

Oct 29 2013: Firstly the Republican Party is just a puppet show, to make the masses believe we still have a two party system.
The NSA was never about anti-terrorist, it never stop any terrorist. It did not prevent the Boston bomber, or ID him, or help capture him? NSA has done nothing good, sure they say it has but provide no proof.

FYI: There is a 69% increase in terrorist attacks since 2011, ya NSA is really helping.
