why do the majority of folks frown on the possibility of a materialist existance.

When seeing debates roll on about materialism vs immortal soul vs biblical teachings I've noticed most folks talk about materialism as if material is unworthy. What gives you that preconception especially when we don't fully understand or know everything about the physical realm? I would really appreciate your input, knowledge and ideas on the matter.

Oct 28 2013: When you say 'the majority of folks' you have to define your population sample. On philosophy debate forums, sure, but thats a very small part of the overall population. I'm sure if you take a poll on the entire human population of the planet, most won't even have considered beyond materialistic meanings.
