To utilize gravity

My idea starts with a show I saw on the science channel, it was about the forces on our planet. I was fine with him till he got to gravity, he said gravity was a weak force so he picked up a baseball and tossed it to show. Well if gravity is such a weak force then why didn't he pick up a bulldozer and toss it. Why does it take tons of rocket fuel to launch the space shuttle into space wouldn't a little bottle rocket do the same thing? Now this guy was a scientist so with brains like this working no wonder were where were at. Were trying to come up with alternate fuels well Germany was using this back in ww 2, so how far have we progressed in 70 years? There is a machine in someones mind somewhere that will run of of gravity to run a generator or maybe a motor maybe like a pendulum or something. I know there is some way we can utilize gravity to our advantage. Wind power is nice as long as you have wind and so is solar power as long as you have sunlight but gravity is everywhere 24 7. We need to think outside the box and quit thinking of these things that are in limited supply. Now we got ethanol and bio diesel which takes food off the table and don't even supply enough fuel to take care of Rhode Island. There is a power source that can be utilized with gravity somebody just needs to put there genus into it. It's a force and contrary to some scientists it's a powerful force so if it's a force it can be utilized somehow.

    Apr 17 2011: I don't know enough physics here, but I'm all for the synergy value of throwing in an idea or two from somewhere outside the box.

    1.) If we suspend two magnets attracted to each other, such that gravity is pulling one away from the other, couldn't that be used to generate electricity?

    2.) Why can't we use a wheel with weight at a point on the outside edge to spin generators, instead of requiring steam power (from coal or nuclear)? It would take a small amount of energy to keep the wheel spinning, but that should be less than the work supplied by gravity and centrifugal force.

    I mentioned the part about not being a physicist, right? :-D

    Apr 21 2011: This is what I'm talking about...http://www.magniwork.com/?hop=gray26...wherever this is real or a scam I don't know, but just look at the cost of one of the wind turbines (about 40,000 dollars and you still need wind to run it) and these guys are claiming this device will cost about 5,000 dollars and produce a lot more electricity.
  • Apr 18 2011: The thing is that gravity it self is no energy source. Though you can store energy in gravity fields by lifting things up. Lifting things up takes energy, which can be released later by dropping it again. But the energy source is what ever lifted it up.

    Apr 17 2011: Physicists refer to gravity as a weak force only relative to the forces within subatomic particles or the force of electromagnetism, for example. If gravity were as strong as those, a grain of sand would be unliftable.

    We actually do use gravity to generate electricity, in the form of hydroelectric power. (I could be more pedantic and say that it's really solar power, since evaporation is key to the process, but I won't.) Before electricity, it was used for irrigation and to turn millstones. Tidal power is less common but it's also traceable to gravity.

    I'm not sure how magnetic levitation (which Erik mentioned) could be used to generate electricity; but maglev is used for high-speed rail transport, as propulsion and for eliminating rolling friction.

    Apr 17 2011: Well I'm thinkin' the big winner is "anti-gravity"..then we could just float goods around the world in containers and build without cranes and noise and our cars would just float peacefully any wheer we wanted to go...no fuels or propulsion...NASA id actually working on this at hte moment using acoustic levitation but so far they have only made small ball dance in a vacuum..today a small ball in a vacuuum..tomorrow containers floating around the world navigated by remote control.

  • Apr 22 2011: I'm a chem major and by no means an expert physicist but is it possible that the impression that objects make in space-time are really impressions in an electric field?Wouldn't that unite gravity?

    Apr 19 2011: Well people the only thing I see I have done wrong here is probably sumitting this to the wrong forum, I guess I should have summited it to the questions forum. Now as for Krisztian Pinter, have you done anything right? All you have summited is criticism. I just wanted to spark a thought in someones head but it's people like you that are part of the problem you're wasting all that brain power on everything but thinking. So who's wrong here me for having a thought but not thinking or you for having no thought or thinking?

    Apr 17 2011: I'm not smart enough to come up with anything but just from seeing what were coming up with as solutions to the energy crises I'm not the only one thats not to smart. I don't have the money or resources or brains to come up with anything but everything were coming up with is in limited supply already so all we would do is just go from one crises to another. I'm just trying to put a thought in somebody's head. It just seems like the ones that do are not the ones that are thinking.

      Apr 17 2011: That's not quite fair Krisztian- even Einstein couldn't do his own math. Generating ideas is a different skill than engineering. We should welcome all voices.

I probably should have put this in the debate conversation but I was just getting tired of seeing us come up with all these ideas that are already in limited supply cause sooner or later were going to run out of fossil fuel and I would hate to think all we have to turn to is wind power or solar power or even battery power. So if I offended anyone else I'm sorry.

        Apr 17 2011: einstein did the majority of his own math, contrary to the popular belief. he was a math prodigy actually. but that is tangential to our discussion. cooperation is fun. having a faint clue, and wanting someone else to make it work is not. if some is incapable to contribute to a topic, leave it to those who can.

        suppose you are a marketing manager at a company. i'm the sysadmin there, and i approach you with my idea: people like to communicate. we should somehow use this urge to promote our products. you should work on my idea. what would be your response?
