How can you apply this to someone who is severely depressed?

My husband suffers from depression and closes himself off. How can I help him when so often he doesn't want help? I want to empower him so he thinks it's his idea not mine, he doesn't act like wants my input. He wants to wallow in his self pity. What are some simple things I can start with to try to boost his confidence and empower him?

Sep 30 2013: Sorry about the situation you are facing. Only a qualified psychiatrist / psychologist can suggest what would fit best for your husband. Wishing all the best.
  • Sep 30 2013: Drag him off to a psychologist, and get an expert opinion?

I never was much of a fan of the internet's crowd based diagnostic and treatment. That's what professionals are for.

Sep 30 2013: You should start on fixing what is the root of his depression. Maybe he doesn't need help but rather he need someone to listen to him and to believe in him. Just show your husband how you love, support and believe in him and don't forget to pray for him. If you think this is really a serious problem it is better to seek a professional help.

Sep 30 2013: I'm really sorry to hear that and I understand your feeling. But why is your husband so depressed? You'd better find out the reason, if not I think some psychologists may be some help of you.

Sep 30 2013: Make him realise what he still has rather than concentrate on what he has not. (He still has YOU who cares for him enough to seek help on TED!!)

Next, he needs to ask him self what he truely WANTS. And how he can work towards that in a constructive way.

Sep 30 2013: Pray for him; commit him to Jesus Christ. And just be there. All will be well.

Sep 30 2013: As Nadav and Salim suggest below, do consider consulting a professional. Depression can be dangerous or fatal.

    Sep 30 2013: .

Using body language, tell him that everything is promising.
  • Sep 30 2013: Rather than trying to fix what's wrong, it might be more fruitful to concentrate on what makes him happy, what he is passionate about.
Some sad aspects of life are inavoidable and there is nothing that we can really do about it. But there are good things in life that can help counter the bad and boost moral.
Good luck to you and your husband.
