Why can't women have equal rights? What makes this impossible for people to accept?

Many people always told me that men and women are different. They are not equal, and that the role women plays are for the benefits of men. I believe that all of us, no matter what our age or gender, are always and will always be equal. Why is there so much difficulty in accepting this?

Oct 2 2013: How do you define equality? If not for robots, that lookalike, act alike and get treated alike, what is equality? Or do you mean why can't men and women join and live for one another in the act of living? Where language exists, so does inequality, because we appraise and value things not uniquely, but in comparison. In comparison, there is always a second best. Like tennis. It is called competition, and equality would end competition and greed. Do you want to put the brakes on the world economy and stop power and greed?
Please choose a more worthwhile and realistic struggle.
