Making Mars habitable for humans.

There are a few major problems with people starting life on other planets, namely the planets themselves. Mars is cold, has little to no atmosphere and no useable water currently. People suggest just starting a massive greenhouse effect, by releasing the huge amounts of CO2 trapped in the planet. That theory is fine, but Mars has an atmosphere that does not trap it's gasses very well, because there is no magnetic field to block solar winds from blasting away the newly released CO2, so we need to block those solar rays somehow. Digging to the core of Mars and starting a core reaction seems very difficult to do. I say that the easiest way to create the required magnetic shields would to set in orbit a bunch of spinning magnets with copper wire wrapped around them. They are pretty easy to get spinning and will perpetually spin, because space has no gravity or air. You could also set up solar shields that block the winds, but allow the light to come through focusing on the areas where the frozen CO2/H20 is stored. Once plants are introduced, it should be a relatively quick process to see certain oasis areas pop up that would allow humans to set up camp around. The tempratures will be cold for a while, but eventually raise to the point where all the water is released. We would not see this in our lifetime, but it's not far fetched to think that a couple hundred years from now our great great great great grandkids could take a vacation. The moon has helium 3 for fusion power, that could be transported to Mars for power sources, since we'd need ways to power essential devices. The moon's low gravity and craters would make great space bases that could be a stepping stone for travel to Mars. It would also lessen the need to travel in heavy/expensive rockets. Just a few ideas. It's either my way, or people living in boring domes.

  • Aug 5 2013: I have no idea if your idea would work or not but before we attempt to terraform Mars, why not use your mind to help solve the problems our own world faces? Cause if our Earth goes down the tubes you can bet you will NOT have any great x4 grand kids to worry about!

    Aug 10 2013: Why a goal to inhabit another planet? As beings of such intelligence, we are destroying the splendor and sustainable resources we have here on earth. No other planet, thus far and to our knowledge, has what earth has provided, life. There will perhaps never be a perfect human life form that will conquer the discipline to reach total karma and connection with the world. Our selfish actions have become the very destruction and pollution we now suffer from and fear for future generations. Everything created by man, for the most part, was created for the benefit of man in the moment and not much thought to the long term effects until the side effects caused a change, then we were forced to deal with it and take action. Should we venture out of from our backyard earth to inhabit another planet when we can't fix the disorder we created here. Humankind's greatest faults are greed, envy, lust, gluttony, pride, wrath and sloth, not meaning to coin the phrase, but we are what we are, human. These are the very faults that has placed chaos in our paradise known as earth. We fear losing earth, but only man can stop the fear of man and we need to achieve it here first before we attempt it elsewhere. Man has a strange pattern of repeating his actions and history seems to repeat itself as well. Insightful point, a world of peace is a vision which no man has ever seen.
  • Aug 5 2013: These are just ideas, but I do a lot of reading. A dome over a crater would be quite roomy and able to be pressurized. You may even be able to grow plants and stuff there. Perfect truckstop for other destinations.
  • Aug 5 2013: You can do both. The only reason you have solar panels, is because NASA/JPL were using them first. The Cell phone was a military project. Stopping global warning and predicting global catastrophe is guided by what we observe in space. It's in man's nature to explore and to take on new challenges. We will need to move eventually, when a massive asteroid hits us, or the sun starts to act up, or a gamma ray burst flies our way. You seem content with just sitting it out and crossing your fingers. I personally think it would be very telling of our species if we could do things, other that wage war, screw, eat, and waste resourses.
  • Aug 5 2013: True. I'm aware that they have plans of setting up shop on asteroids. Europa and other moons have water and organic materials. We will not be using traditional rockets though, so harvesting hydrogen and oxygen will only work for certain things, like making water. We would still need helium 3 to power the inevitable fusion powered drive systems, because ion engines take too long to get going. I will try reading those materials you suggested.

    Aug 5 2013: I'm confident that we won't be colonizing Mars. There's nothing on Mars that's not available to us in space itself. I highly recommend reading 'The High Frontier' by Gerard K. O'Neill and 'Mining the Sky' by John S. Lewis.

    Why colonize planets when we can colonize space itself? Once we've escaped the gravity well of Earth, there's no reason for us to settle into another one. All the resources we need are already in space: water and all the volatile gasses (comets), metals and hydrocarbons (asteroids), and unlimited power from the sun.

    Instead of colonizing planets, rather we will build space habitats such as Bernal spheres, Stanford tori, and/or O'Neill cylinders:
