What is your lowest acceptable standard living that will bring you the maximum happiness? Let's debate and low it to the lowest possible!

Let's start with an example:
I will make that simple as a 4x4m clean room, with a pillow, a low-end internet-connected computer, a cool-warm room temperature and food bring to my door every day.
It's acceptable as living standard, but doesn't seem to maximum my happiness. What is your idea. What would make you crazy, crazy happy that you couldn't be positively any more happy? And when you choose to be in that stage you could be forever. In short, what is your notion of your own heaven?

The idea is too make it as real as possible so I will try to attack your ideal condition, by questioning changing in your happiness over time, conflict in interest...etc. And your job is either defending or changing your condition.

Aug 16 2013: Miles away in the wild. I am going to own a piece of land and build on it. One could build on a "home" for years. Make it exactly how you want it. I want to be completely self sustainable. No wasting anything. Build my own windmills for power. No need for internet or anything of that sort. Most of my time would be spent growing food, hunting, fishing and traveling. It would have to be close to the mountains. Nomadic heart.

Sep 2 2013: I think happiness is a feeling from your heart. Sweet dreams can bring you the most costless happy feeling. You can dream about all that you want as if they were truely happening. Being peaceful with oneself is a good way to attain happiness too, I think.

Aug 22 2013: Hahaha....this is exactly why I ask the question in the first place. :)) How would a person like me know there are a 28 years old woman living in such condition and thinking in that way :)) You are very interesting indeed. :)) I still don't know whether I should pity or admire you though.

      Aug 22 2013: Carolyn,
Your words that touch my heart and create admiration are...

"Living with a purpose that one believes in allows the person to be stronger then the cultural norm is capable of intuiting...that is why to this day I believe the impossible by calculation is possible...".

Well said Carolyn, and I wholeheartedly agree!!!

    Aug 17 2013: Hi Simon,

Seeking Happiness is the beginning of misery.
Linking happiness with any living standard is the beginning of the cycle of pleasure and pain.

Aug 17 2013: It's all about contast , I think. Our mind is very linear. Isn't that right?
      • thumb
Aug 17 2013: Contrast is the ability to distinguish.
Misery, or pleasure is the ability to choose.
Get attached to one and avoid the other.
And it is not a matter of right and wrong.
Right and wrong is the conclusion of a mind that cannot see the Truth.
Right and wrong is passing judgement.
Truth is seeing how things are.
Truth is evident, right and wrong are both assumptions due to lack of Truth.

Happiness is the Freedom from Right and Wrong, from Choice.

Aug 18 2013: How does accept the fact that a large number of other human fellows are dying of hunger ease my nerve?
Don't pull Taoism in Zen Buddhism out on me, I don't think you understand it I think.

Aug 18 2013: If Truth does a significant advantages for me, then I will seek for truth, if it does not, I will remain being ignorant if it please me and others.
        • thumb
Aug 18 2013: Contrast is the ability to distinguish. -Alright
Misery, or pleasure is the ability to choose. -Okay
Get attached to one and avoid the other. -This belief only help if you doesn't know it.
And it is not a matter of right and wrong. -Ok
Right and wrong is the conclusion of a mind that cannot see the Truth. -Be careful with that, Right and wrong contain the will of seeking for the truth, they are parts of the truth, but they are not better or less than the truth itself.
Right and wrong is passing judgement. Truth is seeing how things are. - Seeing truth for what good? If I see the truth, then I understand it, but then I pretend I don't know it, does it make me knowing any less truth? Seeing the truth without having the will is just simply stupid.
Truth is evident, right and wrong are both assumptions due to lack of Truth. How do you compare your belief with science?

  • Aug 23 2013: i have lived in a van and lived in a tent for long periods of time and been happy, but then i see happiness as being a byproduct of purposefulness and of meaning in life rather than a goal or product in and of itself.

    • thumb
Aug 18 2013: :))))) I just read some of your comments to discover that you are a loud mouth-er like me :))) You are very interesting indeed :))) May I ask the question :" Do you think we are living in order to enjoy ourself?"
      • thumb
Aug 18 2013: Thank you! :-) Much appreciated.
Do I think we are living in order to enjoy ourself? It depends what you mean by that. If you mean in terms of a transcendent purpose, which is to live life to the best. Then No (considering we didn't evolve to "enjoy ourself" (just to survive), nor do I think there is any transcendent purpose in life).
However I do think we have the ability to enjoy ourselves, and we might as well while we are still alive. :D
Sorry, did that answer your question? :)
        • thumb
          Aug 18 2013: :)) spot on :)) Let's talk some more.
        • thumb
Aug 18 2013: :)) May I ask how old are you? :)) You sound like a teen and around my age :))
        • thumb
Aug 18 2013: :))) I know this is none of my business but did your mind speaking cause you any serious trouble yet?
        • thumb
Aug 18 2013: Do you research about poverty issues? If yes, Did you find any interesting thing?
        • thumb
Aug 18 2013: :))) I am trying to find some people who can help me to pursue my plans. :)) It looks like you are one of the types of people I am looking for. :)) I'm sure you want to do some things with your life. I my knowledge is quite narrow, but I think I can understand some of the major subjects you are studying. If you have the time and interest in what I am talking about. :)) I propose we getting to know the other a little more and discus details about it. What do you think? Would you be kind enough to give me such pleasure?
      • thumb
Aug 18 2013: How did you guess I was a Teen!? (Good observation!). I can't tell you my exact age for security reasons! (If you don't mind).
I don't know much about poverty issues (in terms of Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, and politics). Sorry. However I do find the causes of poverty interesting, and how money influences well-being. (Which doesn't seem like it does become very important after a certain level).
I would be interested in discussing these issues with you more, however there are many on TED more qualified than me! I would just start up more conversations. Lots of people can help you (and collectively hopefully we can come up with some useful idea's!).
Sorry for the many exclamation marks. (And, sorry to say, but some thumbs up would be much appreciated.)
        • thumb
Aug 18 2013: Alright. :)) Fair Enough. I would have done the same. :)) And about the teen thing :)) only teen uses face symbols :))
        • thumb
Aug 18 2013: Try to think of money as a share of nature or economic resources, that will help you understand the notion of money while do not affect by the negativity attitude..

Aug 18 2013: What is your strongest major then? What do you know best , I mean.
        • thumb
Aug 18 2013: Well sure there are some qualified people in the Ted community, but they hold some big jobs, and don't have free time like you and I do. Beside, I think it's good to compare my self with some one around my age. And, you don't have to say any things about yourself. I only ask your age because I wanted to know what is your age when you know these things because many others don't seem to have similar well logistic well divided view :))) I think you are a right handed, good at math but not extremely good because no one in their right mind would go math major, it's too dry.:)) Judging by your tone, I think you are either a single child, or the oldest son, or have some very kind sisters or brothers to be that allow you to be that standup-right and confident.

    Aug 17 2013: Hi Simon,
In the arabic language a single world called "Qana'ah" solves the mystery of happiness. This means "conviction", "satisfaction" and "contentment" all together but it also represents "acceptance" and "enjoyment", accepting what you have and enjoying it. On the other hand, securing your daily food and shelter and freely preform your devotion is the greatest blessing of all, However maximum happiness is subjective to people acceptance.

Aug 17 2013: can you do it?
      • thumb
Aug 17 2013: I believe it, and I've seen people -wealthy ones- living it, You will be surprised! But honestly with all pleasures in today's world it wont be that easy. I understand your ignorant its not easy but from this part of the world it does exist.

Aug 4 2013: what makes me happy is to always be growing, so I can't say one set amount would satisfy me.
    • thumb
Aug 4 2013: what about now? What do you want most, now?
      • thumb
Aug 4 2013: well, currently my life is okay, I have one-room apartment, that means the bedroom and the living room are the same room, plus bathroom and kitchen, radio, telephone, refrigerator. Plus a nice yard that all the apartments share.
        • thumb
Aug 4 2013: :)))))) That sound nice to be Independence. How old are you now? What's your major?
      • thumb
Aug 4 2013: I'm 53. My major was called English with an Interdisciplinary Emphasis, some people have the idea that if you want to understand a piece of literature you can understand it better if you look at it with knowledge of several departments, for me it meant I took half my courses in English and half in other departments that related to literature, such as history, psychology, and anthropology.

Aug 4 2013: This is getting personal, let's talk more by email.
        • thumb
Aug 4 2013: :))) Literature is a way to express themselves, is it not? So to study your major is to study what the author mean. ....Look at it that way, I think philosophy is kind of superior to literature, the study of what is the best could that author mean, how is it , and how it should has been. :)) Science is kind of superior to philosophy.
          In a literature sense:
Philosophy is like the heart, rule by emotion and purpose, to choose some thing over other thing.
Science is like the brain, using logic and rule by physical means.
Literature is like the mouth, is it not?
        • thumb
Aug 4 2013: Do do you think that's about right?
      • thumb
Aug 4 2013: Yes, Simon, when I chose that major at age 23 I only chose it because I enjoyed writing and I didn't know what else to do. If I were to choose today, I would take something more of the sciences, in the line of the sciences.
        • thumb
Aug 4 2013: what are you working on now? It doesn't should like the job get pay much, I wouldn't think why it should get pay much either. It's most about sacrifice for the later generation I think? :)) the genius thing :))))))))) being foolish because foolish is cool :))))

    Aug 4 2013: ..

A person's healthy "lowest living standard bringing maximum happiness”
    should instinctively be:

    (1) Physical necessities of safety: ----
including food, habitat, clothing for protection, etc.
    (2) Spiritual necessities of biological equality-symbiosis: ----
including esteem, love (familial, sexual, friendly), etc.

The healthy “lowest acceptable standard living”
    should instinctively be
less than 1/10 of the average living standards.

Aug 4 2013: A house with four bedrooms, three for my family and another for guests, one pantry/kitchen, one long verandah, 500 square meter kitchen garden, just enough water and energy for 3 people and two pets, one pick up truck to go to the town to collect provisions and books. And an income to support these.
No mobile phone. Just an internet connected functional desktop.
  • Aug 4 2013: I think I would need a lot more books, problems to work on, human contact, especially to bounce ideas off of. It is always better to bounce ideas around over a beer, at least for me.
