Ideas? Or force?

Ideas are very important to the shaping of society. In fact, they are more powerful than bombings or armies or guns. And this is because ideas are capable of spreading without limit. They are behind all the choices we make. They can transform the world in a way that governments and armies cannot. Fighting for liberty with ideas makes more sense to me than fighting with guns or politics or political power. With ideas, we can make real change that lasts.

  • Aug 3 2013: Yes ideas matter, they make real changes in the human world because humans can change their lives because of them. Take for example the idea of "multiply and subdue the earth" or "we are the chosen people", let people take such ideas to heart and you end up with an uncontrolled exploitation of the planet which is close to a stage where it becomes unliveable or to a state where wars and hatred can be perpetuated because everyone else is inferior to us. Then there are ideas which say that all must be treated equal, this leads to a change in society as well. However what really matters here is not to absorb ideas as if they are the be all and end all, if you do this then change or adaptation is hindered and conflicts arise as reality no longer matches the idea. This is swhy in science new ideas are always necessary.
