"I, Robot" : Del; Will Smith's character, hero or anti-hero?
in the movie i, robot, will smith's character 'saves the day' by destroying the most intelligent artificial intelligence in existence.
the reason why he did so was because the artificial intelligence appeared to be taking over humanity, and enslaving humankind.
in the movie, the superior artificial intelligence tried to save and protect humanity, and in doing so it needed to take freedom from humanity.
the AI also said that humanity was destroying earth, and presumably that if the AI didn't do what it attempted to do, humanity would destroy itself.
the three laws of robotics coined by Isaac Asimov are:
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
a fourth law, known as law 0 because it's precedence is required was later coined:
A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.
i believe the superior AI known as Viki in the movie was upholding law 0 by means of inaction.
my question is: is 'del' really a hero in the movie, or an anti-hero who's actions will eventually destroy humankind?
