What do you think is the purpose of humanity?

I know this is a big question but don' t let your ego put you off. Everyone is a full member of humanity and is equally qualified, to answer this question. How does humanity need to grow and how to you want to grow. How does this contribute to the purpose of humanity?

Jul 26 2013: In certain situations, I don't believe in the existence of a pre-defined purpose. This happens to be one of those situations for me. Although, I suppose if we approach this from an evolutionary regard, then the sole purpose of humanity would be to reproduce, I guess (haha).

Otherwise, I think a purpose is something that is individually defined amongst each of ourselves, and then applied to the larger direction in which humanity is sought to evolve wholly. Technology, media, business etc. are all things a lot of us seek to contribute to as individuals, and these are also things that society and humanity at large is comprised of today. So to me, our actions, beliefs, values and such constitute to what we see as the overall "purpose" of humanity — and of course, that is subjective and hence dependent on our majority.

Jul 25 2013: Hi again Deepak...............didn't get back in time to communicate in the other thread before it closed. Maybe here we can delve into the Vedas some other time if TED hasn't wiped me.

Anyways back to your statement................Q. Isn't your aforementioned a all knowing egoistic premise? :)
  • Jul 26 2013: to pro-create and keep the human race going and I think we are failing.
  • Jul 26 2013: To co-exist together. I think no one can live alone. Even though someone wants to be alone and I have also introspective side of my ego sometimes. Eventually, we are all interconnected. High technologies and media help us to contact with each other.
  • Jul 25 2013: The purpose of being human is an opportunity to be truly alive. This is a very difficult thing to be as any person who has lived knows.

Jul 25 2013: I would say to enjoy life in a healthy way.

    Jul 25 2013: Hi Teresa.
Humanity's purpose is to connect with our creator & spend eternity with him.

    :-)

  • Aug 24 2013: Find out who you Truly are and the question of Purpose dissolves.
  • Aug 22 2013: Purpose, since when did "humanity" need a purpose?

But if you want one - most people's purpose is to drag their ass out of bed - come a Monday morning. No, its not very high brow is it - that, none the less, does not make it any less true.

Aug 22 2013: Our "purpose", if there were one, would certainly be up to ourselves. But I don't believe humanity has agreed on a purpose, Teresa. Sounds like something UN bureaucrats with little to do might come up with: "Humanity's Statement of Purpose." I can even see the document's preamble before me: "We, the peoples of the Earth ..." followed by the usual pap about living in peace and harmony.

Those are fine sentiments, but I think it's more useful to speak in terms of shorter-term aims, or goals. In the absence of a single purpose for humanity, make it your own purpose to achieve some worthwhile aims, then move on. Be flexible, even in purpose.
  • Aug 22 2013: Honestly, I don't think humanity has any real purpose
We're a product of evolution, same as every other living being, but evolution is just a result of years of statistics applied to reproduction of the fittest. It doesn't think, and its not even an entity; seeing as a purpose requires intelligent planning, anything produced by natural process shouldn't have one by my definition.

Neglecting various supernatural powers I don't believe in, I don't think we or anything else has any purpose. We just are.

    Aug 22 2013: Hi

Interesting assumption, that one knows what being human is, and then we look for the purpose of it.
The question is not clear because I am not clear that we know what being a human is. Being, as in acting, rather than looking like a human.

Jul 25 2013: Humanity does not / can't have any purpose but individual human can have it. Can combined purpose of all individuals be called as purpose of Humanity ?
  • Jul 25 2013: It is very apparent.
It is to kill others, destroy the environment and rid the world of
all other species or life forms.
That is exactly what humanity is doing.

Why? Because of beliefs and fear.
Beliefs that are lies and fear that one won't get what they need or they will lose what they have.

To say it is to serve for the betterment of all seems preposterous, foolish and is simply one
denying the truth of reality to themselves.

We humans have had ample time to create a better world for all, without destroying the planet,
but the opposite is exactly what we have done and are continuing to do.

This has been done, not because of some 'egoistic nature of mankind' but because of fear.
Fear helps create or contributes to the development of an unhealthy ego.
A large one or a puny one. They are the same. In what way?
They are both unhealthy because they are not balanced.
We are not, I repeat, we are not working for the betterment of all.
We are destroying it all and playing a part in destroying it all based on
false beliefs, hope, which is false, and faith, which is to do nothing but trust
some elusive, never seen before entity, is going to suddenly come out of the
rotten woodwork, and decide to save it all and everyone who is here.
Those who have died already by the hands of those who are unhealthy, can never
be resolved, healed or have justice granted to them.

It is too bad, sad, but it is true.
The change needed is so radical many simply dismiss it with scorn, derision or an unwillingness
to think, imagine and then do.
