What is the benefit of using Hydroponic Soil versus Natural Soil?

After having a few discussions about hydroponic soil versus natural soil with some gardners and landscapers, I was told that usually natural soil provides a better yield in vegetable gardens than hydroponics.

Does anyone have any references to the research behind this statement? I have no idea where I would be able to find supporting claims for that.

Also, I am curious to know if TED has any opinion, or experience, on this. I find that research is crucial, but often hard to find. So, hearing first-hand experience would be very helpful

  • Jul 10 2013: Well thank you for correcting me. Like I said, I don't know much about "hydroponics" but I have used it before, and I have gotten great results. I was only intrigued to learn more about using natural soil because gardeners have told me they have better growth in any plant they use natural soil to grow.
