Talking without the need to impress. Feel free to relax with this one.

I have noticed that when people write, especially on TED, they tend to be wordy and and tend to stretch the thought a bit. Not this time.

Please give us 1 or 2 sentences about anything that may be on your mind and feel free to be a bit politically incorrect. Keep it clean because kids have thoughts too. However I do encourage short and too the point....but most of all honest

Let's hear you.

  • Jul 16 2013: Actually the most annoying posts are not necessarily from 1 or 2 posts taking to the limit of 2000 words. The more annoying posts are those of a host or someone else to butt into the conversation repeatedly "attacking" every posts from many others who hold the opposing view of his. In the process, the guy repeated much of the same thing, usually quite long too, to make the casual readers losing their interest even trying to join in the discussion.
Oops, I have already talked too much. Hope you'll excuse my long-winded explanation.

Jul 16 2013: Bart, this was just meant to be a fun thing. I do not appreciate the insult. If this subject does not appeal to you feel free to to take your hostilty elsewhere. Perhaps there is a conversation about about the joy of relaxing somewhere. However if you feel the ned to criticize my topics please do so in 1 or 2 sentences.
      • Jul 16 2013: Frank, You completely misunderstood my previous comment. I had never criticized your topic, or you. Maybe My trying of keeping it short couldn't get it through with my real intention.. That's the irony.
  • thumb
Jul 14 2013: I should chime in too.

I may not be everyone's first choice but I will never be someone's last resort.

Jul 12 2013: I will never settle for anything less than your full attention. I am like a 5 year old attention seeking kid and about as possessive, if you know what I mean.

Jul 12 2013: Is difficult to express something in a few words and especially written. Speaking you can help with your body move, then express feelings and ideas in a better way ,interact with the other part to check if is understanding you. Writing you must expose your idea, and describe your feelings about that, etc to be sure that someone that read your write in another time could well understand you, and not have different interpretations.

Jul 9 2013: Nice try Frank. Short and to the point lasted what 6 comments? Maybe we can get the TED staff to limit the comments to 140 characters. Like Twitter. Of course, that could lead to 20 consecutive comments

Jul 9 2013: When I was active in Facebook, it's spooky question used to haunt me. You remember it? What's on your mind?
In response I used to write one liners, and many interesting conversations seeded from those. Some even said that these one liners sounded prophetic.
Let me be honest then. Here goes some.

Looking for happiness can make you very unhappy.

    or

If everybody around you starts to agree with you, you are in trouble.

Jul 9 2013: Moreover, I would feel at a loss. There is always something to learn from disagreement. Agreement feels good but does not enrich really.
Managing descent is a skill we all can benefit from.
Politicians do disagree, but towards the safer side, the side with right numbers.
I am imagining the art of ass kissing, rich area.
        • thumb
Jul 9 2013: I do agree that this a rich area, but what do you mean by 'the right numbers'? Numbers are not wrong or right. That's a rich area to do something with, reflect upon. Since we were mentioning science, truth and facts in other conversations - do you remember an independent film The Pi? A mathematician sitting at his computer, trying to find out about one thing and learn about one thing - that maths is the language of nature. Of everything. It is a language, but nature is a code that keeps changing - binary, box-type (A,D, mutations etc ie - the helix)... Not the language of what is right.

Just a little rant, sorry. Especially if I was too wordy.

At school we had to learn about switching alleles, what may happen, gene recombination at a basic level. That was boring. This conversation is fun :)

Best wishes to both you and conversation host.

Jul 9 2013: Let me explain right number.
When 80 people are saying that it will be wrong/bad for a mosque to come up near ground zero (of twin towers) and 20 are saying that if erected on a private property, it's perfectly alright, 20 is the right number to disagree with.
I do not see much future of you dear Anna as a politician. :)
Good rant. Come up with more. Let words descend like birds on a lake.
        Thanks.

Jul 9 2013: Yes, that question was even weirder in different languages. And it keeps haunting me especially because it had a tendency to change. What are you thinking about? That's a bit different than "what's on your mind" but a lot of times a just felt the need and urge to answer - "A lot."

Jul 9 2013: Something in your OP caught my eye.
It is difficult to be honest, particularly when one needs to try to be.

Jul 9 2013: You can do it. I have faith in you.

  • Jul 9 2013: Happiness feels heathy and natural. Positive anything seems to be the rational choice to achieve true, positive goals in all categories.

Thank you, Frank, for starting this conversation.

Jul 9 2013: I do not perceive people's choosing their words to impress. Rather, I think people take advantage of a format that readiiy accomodates more than sound bites.

Jul 8 2013: One logical idea to solve any problem with many involved to create the best solution to the problem within the one logical idea.
I have just been inspired, thank ya.
  • Aug 5 2013: I just wanna sound smart.
"....but most of all honest" ... ... with the G.O.V.'s [et al.] ear glued to the keyboard?! ("I'm a frayed knot!")
My other biggest problem with talking, is that words usually become the freezing of reality. All-too-often speaking of neat, hard-earned insights ruins them.

Jul 27 2013: Neutron walks into a bar and didn't feel an attraction to anyone..... Neutron asks the bartender for a drink, the drink is served and the bartender says "No charge for you"...... Oxygen went out with Potassium and it went OK. Oxygen could have gone with Magnesium but OMG.... Courtesy of my grandson's 7th grade science class.

On the dark side, all my conversations are gone to cyber hell and I am left with a blank page... TED techs will get back to me soon... I hope

Jul 27 2013: Yeah, this conversation has gone south.

Jul 27 2013: Hey it could be worse.... I had one that no one responded to except one guy said I should quit TED.

Jul 18 2013: I am just curious to see how the world would transform in 50 years. Could it be, that the TED Community has contributed significantly to this change? I want to flash forward and see what will happen.
    • thumb
Jul 18 2013: Son, if you fast forward you will miss the fun. Even if you are older and do not have 50 more years there is still fun to be had. Take the scenic route.

Jul 16 2013: When you look over on the left to the avatar wall.......have any of you ever seen your own avatar there?

    I have never seen mine or Fritzie's or Kate's.....but I always see Colleen's, and Krizstian's and Arkady's.

    Any thoughts?
    • thumb
Jul 16 2013: Maybe they are looking for real faces.... I'll post a picture and see if it gets there.
    • thumb
Jul 17 2013: I couldn't find a picture to post. I did have a head shot that from my salad days when I tried acting... I was so bad.
Anyway, I looked like a cheap knockoff of Frankie Avalon. Zoot suit and hair combed back into a duck tail.. It was nice to reminisce from when I had hair. But I didn't post it.
But, it was nice to go back. Rotary dial phones, computers built with huge banks of vacuum tubes, girls in bobbby socks, who just said no...
I kind of miss those days...

Jul 17 2013: Oh boy Mike.....I guess I opened up a can of gummy worms....LOL

I really don't think that having a picture matters.

Sometimes what I see in the wall is a bicycle, or even now there is some sort of cooking pot, I'm guessing....or an owl.

I guess it is a random pick.....I was just curious if anybody has ever seen their own avatar on there when they log on......I guess I'll continue to be in the dark regarding this most curious dilemma of mine.

Speaking of Frankie Avalon.........have you seen the ads for the new Disney beach movie reminiscent of the his days.......check it out Mike....

Jul 17 2013: Frankie? No, No!

He got Annette and I didn't. My young heart was broken... I quit school and joined the Army. Oh, the tragedy of it all. I even considered going to St. Louis and joining a cloistered order, where you remained silent and made jams and jellies... the silent thing made me go to the Army.

Jul 16 2013: I got a problem, maybe someone has had this problem and can help me understand.
It's about submissions to TED. I get these brilliant conversations to submit, everyone would be enthralled to join in, often with maximum descriptions and.... I get a CSRF attack. I forget what I wrote and just quit. Should I be paranoiac?
  • thumb
    Jul 15 2013: See what I mean ?

I did not claim any of what you said. All I said was write it in 1 or 2 sentences. If you can't, you can't. No big thing.

Jul 15 2013: it is just part of a conversation. Not important.
  • thumb
Jul 15 2013: Its really not about impressing when I write long responses. Sometimes its just me expressing myself as much as I can. And sometimes,I get writer's block and am not able to express myself properly, which also leads to long responses.

And most of us here like to read and write long responses just because we like it. This is sort of our way of spending time.

I don't see any ill-effects of writing long paragraphs other than the non-reading crowds getting bored.
