How much does nutrition impact your life?

What are the impacts of bad eating habits? Do you eat the recommended amounts of vegetables? Is this just about weight?

Bad eating habits can cause:

1. Low Energy
2. Depression
3. Mood Swings

These are just three among many others. Could you change your life by changing what you eat?

I believe you can. It takes a massive amount of physical and mental energy to overcome problems. You cannot focus if your brain isn't functioning correctly. Nutritional awareness could change your life. I believe your eating habits have a greater impact on your life than most realize.

What do you think?

Do you take a multivitamin? Would you consider taking a multivitamin every day if you do not already?

I would love to hear from all of you on this.

        May 17 2013: As I said i do three things
        I try to Be Happy as far as possible
        I eat sparingly, a high protein and low carb and low fat diet. I take nutritional suppliments.
        I regularly walk 30min, Jog 17 min, streching exercise and Yoga (including Surya namaskar ie Salutation to Sun) 40 min and end my session with a prayer (i sing) , In the evening i do swimming but not very regular.

        I am 175 cm and weigh 70 -72 kg My BMI body mass index is 22 -23

    I believe this too, absolutely.

    We enjoy making and eating home-cooked meals, using fresh ingredients and, as I always say, a dash of 'extra lovin'' My kids actually need to watch me take a 'pinch' of love from my heart and toss it into the pan or over their plates like garnish before they'll eat it. When the weather gets better, I can't wait to harvest the veggies we sowed in the garden (if the rabbits don't get them first)!

    When I was young and had no strings that tied me down, playing gigs till the early hours and waking up late, I ate poorly! Fast food, microwave meals, or sometimes nothing at all! I'm almost ashamed, looking back, that I would treat my body with so little respect. I guess I had energy to spare in those days!
    Now, besides three meals a day (there's that magic number again!!), we take vitamin supplements every day as well (B, C and E) which help us against all the germs our kids bring home from school!

      I think eating home-cooked meals is a great way to keep your diet healthy. What's your favorite recipe to make at home? Do you experiment much?
      • May 16 2013: Henry, I never know what I'm going to make, I just toss stuff together till it tastes good... Or hope it does, anyway. I do have a couple 'safe' meals, (you know, when people are coming or something), like this one, my "Not So Swedish Meatballs":
        - 500gr of minced meat
        - an egg
        - bread crumbs (toasted bread crumbled)
        - spring onion and garlic
        - some veggie
        - meat bouillon
        - Ketjap Ajam (sweet soy sauce)
        - red wine
        - plain yoghurt

        First I add the meat, egg and bread crumbs in a bowl and smoosh it all together by hand.
        Then, I roll the meatballs, which is always good fun.
        I throw some olive oil in a deep pan and toss in the sliced spring onion and a few cloves of garlic.
        I chop up the veggie (zucchini or mushrooms work really well) and let them simmer with the onion.
        When the veggies are sort of soft-ish (after a few minutes) I put in the meatballs, and immediately add the Ketjap Ajam (sweet soy sauce) and a shlock of red wine.
        Then I add the bouillon by crumbling it directly into the pan. None of this mixing it in hot water! Just throw it in.
        I stick the lid on and let it simmer for a bit, stirring a few times.
        Finally, about 5 minutes before you serve it up, add a few dollops of yoghurt. This gives it a fresh and slightly tangy flavor.

        Serve with anything - lovely brown bread, potatoes, fries, pasta, rice...

    I believe nutrition impacts my life a WHOLE LOT! You've heard the saying...we are what we eat? I grew up eating food out of our garden, and I still continue the practice of growing most of my own food. I have always LOVED fresh fruits, veggies and herbs, which is my main diet in the summer. I am grateful for my hunting and fishing friends who provide venison and fish....wild salmon is my favorite. My diet changes with the seasons because I prefer to eat very fresh, in season food.

    It is exactly as you say Henry....the body and mind does not work as well if we do not provide the appropriate fuel.

    I certainly would consider taking a multivitamin if I thought I needed it. However, I feel that my diet of fresh natural foods is sufficient. I go to the doctor about every 3-4 years just to check things out. All tests seem to indicate a body that is younger than my actual age.

    Poor diets cause a LOT of medical challenges, and we have the ability to influence our health with the choices we make. I choose to give myself the gift of good health by fueling the body/mind with good food:>)

      As always a great response from you Colleen. So you don't think a multivitamin is necessary? I was reading recently about nutrition levels in our food supply. Apparently, many of the foods we eat today lack nutrients they once had. I think this is the result of food processing.

      However, I guess if you don't eat processed foods you may be in the clear. Does your doctor tell you multivitamins aren't necessary, or is this something you choose to do on your own?

        I think whether or not a multivitamin is helpful depends on what kind of food a person is eating. If one is eating a bunch of junk, then a multivitamin might be helpful. That doesn't make sense to me however. Why eat junk food, then have to spend money to buy vitamins?

        Anyway, vitamin supplements are processed, so it's questionable how much value is really in them. I agree that processing foods and supplements may deplete, or significantly decrease nutritional value.

        The only "processed" food I eat is frozen foods which I pick from the garden and freeze immediately, for use in the winter months. Although it is frozen, I suggest that because it is picked fresh and frozen immediately, it probably has more nutritional value than store bought foods.

        My doctor and I are partners in my health care, and she knows my lifestyle, so she makes suggestions, and knows that I will consider it. She often suggests vitimin D supplements in the winter months because we are in an area where we don't get a lot of sun for a few months. Sometimes I take them and sometimes not.....depends on how I feel. I listen to the body, as well as explore lots of information, which helps me make health care decisions. I am also familiar with the systems of the body/mind and the interconnections, so listening to the body helps quite a bit:>)

          Thank you for making me do my research. Many studies show that multivitamins may even be harmful to your health. Many others suggest it is a waste of money.

          I had always assumed multivitamins were an essential part of a healthy diet. We live and learn. I probably wont be quitting my vitamin routine just yet, but I will definitely not rely on them as heavily.

          It's always a good feeling when I learn something new. Especially something I could have just searched for on the internet. It goes to show that research is important.

        May 18 2013: I think a lot of people assume multivitamins are good Henry. The fact is, the value of taking multivitamins has been questioned and researched for quite awhile....good you discovered the information:>)

        I think natural, organic foods are the BEST for our health:>)

    May 15 2013: Some people state that the core problem with the optimum diet is missing trace minerals. The theory being that before dams were built the top soil of the farm land was replenished. IMO opinion the benchmark on this is flavor, if you taste home grown tomatoes compared to store bought the difference is amazing.

    The question is what is the optimum diet for humans. I would say dead animals is part of the diet but not ones filled with hormones. Certainly vegetables but organic might be better because of the aforementioned.

      First let me say thank you for a well thought out response. Do you take a multivitamin daily? What does your daily diet consist of? Fresh fruit and veggies definitely do have a better taste. We have farmer's markets here in Florida. Do you have any of those near you?

        May 15 2013: No to the vitamin question. Dead animals and vegetables.Fresh is not the only thing it is vegetables that have the trace minerals. Yea organic farms are quite the thing these days and is cool for a number of reasons.

          Do you buy groceries from a local market? I love the fresh fruit and veggies. The strawberries and cherries are just amazing!

          No vitamins huh? Any reason you don't take them? Have you ever considered it?

    May 18 2013: To answer your question. I'm not completely sure how it impacts my life but I read and used to read much more than now, I learnt and still learn and... and I test. That's what I do when it comes to microbiological, vitamin-level. Does it work? What was the effect? How to battle it and/or reduce or avoid it in the future?

    What's the symptom and what's the problem?

    What's the syndrome and what's the effect/problem/symptom to adress?

    Cause and effect. Effect and cause. What causes effects and causes, what effects both.

    I'm not always succesful at my humble see/feel/read/get/act/scratch my head research, but at least I try in order to help myself and others like myseld or completely unlike myself.

    I eat whatever tastes ok and I usually feel horrible, especially in the morning. Mood is fine, though. I did try to eat healthful stuff for a while but the depravation made me an angrier person. I truly admire people who can stick to a diet and get control of their health this way.
    My only option, personnally, is to run like hell and try to burn the crap I couldn't help ingesting.

    Now, I eat as close to the 10,000 years ago norm as possible.
    That is eating mostly vegetables and fruits like those during gathering:
    (1) As various as possible.
    (2) As fresh as possible.
    (3) Containing man-made chemicals as less as possible.

    May 16 2013: Henry I've been following a unique diet for five years: I've been living on skim milk. Every day I drink about two gallons of skim milk, and I don't eat or drink anything else. I did it because I have eye discomfort and the eye doctors can't fix it very well. The skim milk diet has been good for me, I've lost 80 pounds and maintained the loss, energy up, high cholesterol gone, eyes tolerable if not perfect. I'm in touch now with some of the top nutritionists in the United States, I'm trying to get "official" approval for this diet so I can advocate it to other people.

      Let me say congrats for your weight loss. I myself lost 130 pounds. I have never heard of a skim milk diet. So you are saying you don't eat anything? That's definitely different, but if it works for you that's great. What do the nutritionists say about it? Is this a long-term kind of diet, or something for weight loss?

        May 16 2013: Yeah, nothing but skim milk. The nutritionists say it lacks certain nutrients and thus far cannot endorse it. I can tell you that during the five years I've lived on skim milk, I decided for two weeks to try a more typical "healthy" diet. I followed the USDA "food pyramid," which advocates certain amounts of servings of different foods. I felt lousy, my eyes ached, and I was tired. I returned to skim milk and felt good again.

        I think one reason milk is a great food is it's food in liquid form, it's very easy for the body to process and use. Solid food is nourishing, but because it's solid it stays in your body longer, it never gets 100% broken up, it's always a little "cloggier" than milk.
