Is our socio-economic system outdated? And if so, what would be the solution?

All this suffering, corruption, and war in the world seems to be a trend through out history, could it be that its the foundation of our socio-economic system, which is based upon scarcity (not enough resources to go around), labor, and demand the main contributor to all these problems? For statistical, everyone on the planet can be fed, housed, clothed, and have a healthy state of mind, with the help of technology actually put towards making efficient, sustainable, life supporting goods, instead of unsustainable products like weapons and chemicals for war and genetically modified organisms in our foods. Which combined has declined every life supporting system on the planet.

What do you think?

May 21 2013: I really enjoyed reading your opinions. One more thing i would like to say to anyone who is interested in changing our social paradigm and looking towards a more sustainable approach to meeting humans needs across the globe, please watch this movie and educate yourselves and others in your community alike. The shift in paradigm will only happen with a revolution in conciousness. Thanks.

May 20 2013: Such a vexing and frustrating question. Clearly there is no simple answer as there are so many intergrated moving parts. To answer your first question, in my opinion, yes the system is outdated. The second part is a lot more long winded.

No matter where you are born, people are inducted/obliged to their countries functionalism. By and large, those functions/systems are very well established and ingrained into the culture of those nations and essentially is the way things are done.

To me part of the solution is to circumvent that whole process by creating a new paradigm. By taking nations out of the context you can create a new paradigm. We are all children of Planet Earth and we are all individuals and online we can all be connected like in no other way in our history.

Thus, to me, by creating an online "Earth Citizen" community it could be possible to start to make incremental changes that will utimately (ideally anyway) replace one lot of world norms for better ones.

Education and information are key here. People need to be able to make well thought through educated and informed decisions, backed up by local intelligence and global networking.

Corruption needs to be identified and stamped out by co operative and honourable authorities. Plans, measures and actions taken. The reasons for the corruption need to be identified and addressed with remedies put in place to remove the incentives to do so in the first place.

The Earth Citizen community would need to become very much like a corporation in many respects with short term and long term goals identified, budgets, R&D, strategies and plans for implementation when and where and how by whom.

There are many worthwhile charities operating across societies, however, in my view, there should as part of the world strategy be, scientifically targeted objectives that would receive the majority priority funding for cure research. By setting global objectives, we as a global community can realise them. :D
  • May 18 2013: People seem to love the label "system".

IMO, there is no socio-economic system. What some people call the socio-economic system appears to me to be a power struggle. Some people seem to have a need to exercise power over other people, and they pursue that need. To me, this pursuit seems meaningless, because I have no such need.

I have recently started thinking that all of our perceptions are choices. That is NOT to say that we can perceive reality in any way that we choose, and that any choice is as good as any other. Just the opposite. Choosing to perceive things in the most realistic and useful way is a critical choice.
  • May 16 2013: Be careful what you ask for - you may get it. That's certainly true for the nit-wits we might labvel as the Masters of the Universe.
  • May 16 2013: These are tough issues. I've mentioned this before but maybe it is worth repeating.....If one considers that we are on a speck of dust floating in space, spinning at about 1000 mph, and screaming around a burning ball of gas at about 60,000 miles per hour AND then contrasts those basic facts with crap like War, Environmental destruction, poverty, scarcity, mental slavery, etc etc etc........We, as a species, are either deeply deeply Asleep or deeply deeply Insane. I'm hoping for the first possibility.
  • May 16 2013: Huey.. be more specific. are you asking if capitalism and representative government are outdated or are you asking if our cultural norms and religions are outdated, or both? My perception is that our societies technologically, scientifically, and legally are far more sophisticated than people. what that means is that evolution engineered us in a particular way that is counter-intuitive to the conditions many people live in. Think about it; do ideologies, hatred, and the battle for resources cause war? well they do but its deeper than that.. wars corruption and greed are symptoms of our physchology.. the psychology that developed as a result of the conditions and needs of our paleolithic ancestors . The only thing that can wake people up are themselves. Awareness wisdom and adopting a new ethos, are the solutions, at least in my eyes, to the problem.

May 16 2013: I see what your saying. But look at it from this perspective. What if people that want all this extra power and to separate societies to control resources, do it because that is what is rewarded in our paradigm. Think about it, what is the driving mechanism for our economic system? Self-preservation and Self-Interest. Controlling resources and taking away from others is a way of self-preserving either for yourself, your family, or your business.

The corporations that are exploiting resources and labor around the world and even in our own countries, do it because that is what is rewarded financially in society. Doesn't matter what you do to make money, even if it means exploiting other people, or worse, even your own, as long as you are continuously growing and self-preserving your establishment. That is what our socio-economic system has been based on ageing back to the ancient Egyptians.

Dont get me wrong we have made it a long way with respects to technology, but the bedrock of society has always been money, labor, and competition. Which breeds inequality, classism (wealth gap), exploitation of resources for self-preservation, and not to mention the worst one of all, the rich ruling elite. Which debunks the myth that we actually have a democracy, we don't, you either have great wealth in the hands of few, or democracy, but you cannot have both.

So i bring up the question once again, is our socio-economic system, which is based on money, labor, and competition, the best way of ensuring human prosperity in all categories of health? Or is the foundation of our socio-economic system the source of symptoms such as corruption, greed, and inequality?

    May 16 2013: .

We have too much (about 90%) necessity already.
It is caused by invalid (harmful) happiness.

    Invalid happiness is caused by
    (1) Our instincts can not detect it.
    (2) "Socio-economic system outdated".

May 15 2013: The real problem is the inability/unwillingness to think and take the crap the media spews as fact
    • May 15 2013: So let's focus on the ABILITIES that are ubiquitous among the EQUAL MALES and FEMALES in our wonderful world. SEEK POSITIVE/FIND POSITIVE. You have a choice about what to focus on. May as well choose positive.

May 15 2013: No one is equal, just a fact. No mater how much propaganda spewed otherwise. I seek understanding and viewing things as they are, not positive or negative. I do take offense to my liberty continuing to be taken away and I fight against that in all of it's stripes.
        • May 16 2013: Perhaps you think the word "equal" means "same." Women and Men are EQUAL and DIFFERENT.
