What is the difference between leisure and recreation?

leisure and recreation are crucial for the well being of a person. There are various debates about leisure and recreation, what i understand no one so far was able to give a clear cut definition between the two.
some considered leisure as 'free time' and leisure recreation is what you do during free time.
others considered leisure as an activity (even inactivity) that one engage during free time, they also viewed leisure as opposite of work.
finally, i have come across those who said, leisure as a state of mind and recreation as any activity that one is doing in order to rejuvenate oneself physically and mentally.

Further, when you use these words, make a point of being clear as to what you mean by them.

May 17 2013: I think recreation has to do with some physical activity while leisure time does not necessarily involve such.
  • May 15 2013: I think of recreation as being an active desirable use of free time and leisure as being more of a passive use of free time. Recreation might involve a competitive activity or exercise, leisure might involve a reduced pace of life, decreased activity, and lack of general agenda.
