Is the education crysis a political or cultural problem?

There is a global problem with the education system. Since education plays such a vital part in human development it invevitably plays a vital part in society.
The development of educational programs may be developed by education commities, but the end result is usualy "ajusted" and "contidioned" by politicians, is this the main obstacle that education faces? or does the Lack of cultural conditions, in the form of a industry oriented society, present itself as a even bigger issue?

  • May 14 2013: I believe it is both and more.
    I see the "alternative" solution being a variety of schools to teach a variety of learners.

    School #1: for the students that thrive at a desk, learning from text, work sheets, lectures, and standardized testing, let them have the existing school system that works.

    School#2 (and I know there are some out there): for the student that wants to learn LA/SS, science, math, music, visual and performing arts and other disciplines through an arts infused school. I am an art teacher and continually teach students how to measure, learn proportions, the science of light and mixing colors, think/speak/write about what they see in a piece of art, (musical score/play for the other arts) etc....

    School#3: an outdoor school set up to teach all the disciplines (including the arts of course) where a student can learn physics by climbing a tree and dropping something to measure/test gravity; build a sling shot to teach engineering, design and physics, as well as paint or draw outdoors (plein air), dig up the earth to discover what's below....

    School#4 and more...love to hear about them

    The lessons are endless that can be taught in any of the above environments. However, I see these schools/environments as having to be physically separate/different schools with teachers that fit best with the environment. Logistically they could be housed in the same building, but need to have a distinction btw them.

    In most cases, if the teacher (or professional) is an expert in their subject matter, they could most likely teach at any one of the above schools. A teacher would probably be more inspiring if they selected the type of school they would like to teach at...and maybe move around these schools throughout their career. It would definitely keep me interested in learning more about what I am teaching.

    This kind of educational revolution would call for a new process politically and economically, as well as culturally with a focus on our students.
  • Jun 2 2013: I consider it could be a demograpy problem. It seems that today the education system is partly designed to make kids do someting.This "doing something" is to occupate their time for them not to become some anti-social characters. In combination with a need for a qualified workforce that's why it could be considered a political problem.

    However education is not just about geting knowledge and occupying time. It is also about socialisation! It might be that good education is not only about knowledge, but about communication and shating ideas. If we are to modernize educational system in a way to cut costs and increase knowledge it is possiable to promote internet-based education. But it won't promote team work and communication as a traditional education. That's why it is a cultural problem.

    May 21 2013: I'm not very politically knowledgeable, but I can speak toward the cultural aspect of your question. I believe that part of the education crisis in the US is due to culture. I think this is partly reflected in the entertainment industry. The most famous people in the US are movie stars, artists (of music), and athletes. Kids grow up seeing these people on TV most of the time and hearing these people on the radios, instead of the role models that they should be seeing and hearing. Sure, there is PBS, History Channel, National Georgraphic, and others, but the vast majority of TV is dedicated to the entertainment industry. This is understandable, but I think at least one of two things happen: 1. Parents or some other source should warn their children that the entertainers aren't the only people who succeed in life. Fame isn't everything and shouldn't even be a goal; 2. Have education and TED-related channels contain a larger portion of the entertainment industry. Kids are learning that they don't have to learn to succeed. They just have to be talented.

    Sorry if I restated someone's idea.

    May 14 2013: I believe it is political. But I'm not just talking about politicians. I'm talking about power, and the struggle for it.

    The game of politics is not only played by politicians! If you don't realize that, you need to go back and study your history better.

    There are many players in the game of politics. They include the people who are "in power" right now, and all the others who have been and want it back, and others who haven't been yet and want some. There are also the criminals, who play the game around its edges. They have ALWAYS been there, too, and sometimes they get into "official" positions in government or business.

    There are a lot of these players who want workers - preferably slaves - so why should you have a "good" education system that makes everyone more able and self-confident? That's the problem. There is a lot of political pressure to NOT make better schools.

    May 13 2013: Probally both. In the USA President Carter made education a cabnet post and at that point education moved from focused on the student to the board room / administration / command and control / etc ... As the government and unions moved in the parents and the community were pushed out. This has continued until today where we in the USA must do the governments bidding or lose all funding. In the USA Arne Duncan (Secretary of Education) has stated he wants all textbooks, syllabus, tests, to be developed and administered by the government. The government has added requirements that have taken all options from the teachers and made teaching the test the only focus.

    To say that it is ALL the governments fault would be wrong. WE THE PEOPLE have allowed this to occur. We have elected and re-elected people into offrice that made no pretense that it was their intention to socialize the country and control the population through big government and elite leadership that is prevelant in socialist and communist regimes.

    In our local school system the board room was filled every meeting for years ... now only those who have a interest in a particular item being discussed attend. Between the state and local government .. few decisions are left to the community / school board. Funding is the focus of most all meetings and conversations within the school system. Parent / teacher meetings are a requirement .. just a check mark to meet a need ... little is accomplished because the locals have so little control to make changes.

    Answer: The culture (us) have allowed the politicians to take all control and decisions to their level with only voting left as a input.

    The US has become more divided in recent years ... control more pervenant ... class wars ... racial issues ... and the irresponsibility of the media. We have become to like the taste of koolade and drink it as a choice.

    Jun 8 2013: Politicians are a reflection of us.

    A culture by definition is a confluence of agreements, they are the initial introduction to education. It is true that a person is responsible for his own education but the culture pushes a person in a direction.

    When politics gets involved it is a negative feed back loop of the nanny state that effects the culture. This is sad to hear from a person who is writing from Chile.

    Education has become the idea of 8-hour days in a building, which functions outside of the parental and communal guidance of society.

    The very real resolution to this problem would be if parents and communities boycotted the schools until the system became better. In the time of a boycott, parents could put together funds to allow other parents to take turn giving lessons and teaching basic skills. This model of teaching (parents teaching other children, and children learning from other parents) would do well for the time implemented. A parent has the 'responsibility' installed with their status (necessary for attention-taking), but would still not be their parent (depending on community's set-up of model) and can still not feel as 'under the gun' or under-pressure to excel in the lesson.

    We are society, we are the difference between effective change and being told what is changing. We lost that somewhere, we lost the realization we are more than just bodies but societies, at least most of us have, and need to get it back. Just like technology, which is USUALLY invented to aid and assist the human condition, we must put efforts into into using technology to invent new ways to teach the inventors and aids (our future).

    Let's put this in another perspective: In America a new history text book is over 200 dollars, now we have kindle tablets which cost nearly the same.... If we can afford to put a handheld laptop in every childs hand, but cannot afford to reevaluate our entire education system... We are doomed to fail.
  • May 26 2013: The education crisis is the result of the culture of elevating mediocrity. As a result of this culture, the politics as become the ole driving force in education. The lack of accountability and ownership from the parents has placed the name on teachers and schools. In my 15 years of teaching, I have seen a pattern of reform based on money. Testing companies getting rich, charter schools, and private partnerships. The result is the same= teach to the test and those who can afford good education versus those who cannot.

    May 14 2013: who is ruining education,industry(lack of),government,who? Historically,the flow of information,what is known and not known was filtered through religion and governments..they did not want an upsurgent population,so limiting information was a way to control the masses. Again around Freuds time this idea of limiting knowledge was considered helpful as government saw people to be to stupid to make judgements and therefore had to be limited in what they are told. Using this history as the basis for opinion...I would by behavior have to say it is government again..but with the compliance of political elements in the school...perhaps not the actual teachers themselves. To have a limited population self aware about science, math,economics,health makes for a very pliable consumer. Even today most of the world does not know nutrtion,or health concepts...barely able to know how money works...none of this is an accident...This is a historical way of the haves maintaining the greater portion of wealth for themselves...since ancient Rome...Im sorry I am unable to tell you any answers except study histoy, economics,science,on your own and look at those who hoard resources as the pitiful group of sad individuals they must be to feel themselves entitled to use people to do all their work for them

    May 13 2013: The problem is stagnation in definition, content and delivery method. It lives apart from the culture like an antique.

    Consider how useful covering basic reading and math would be to the farmers in the tiny villages of China and India. From what I understand, they're ripped off regularly by wholesalers. Yet, education is only defined as the official K through 12 and K is still fought over.
    Consider how dependent North America is on checkbooks and driving and yet neither is core curriculum in 9 through 12.
    Consider how nimble other communications has evolved and yet kids are still spending their school days in chairs, staring at the back of someone's head as they write on boards as did their parents, grandparents, great-grandparents.

    Overhaul is harder the longer a system is in neglect. The discovery and resolution of student problems (dyslexia, learning disorders, etc.) has progressed, but the product of education hasn't. Industry is contributing less, unwilling to do any training, even on their own highly specialized unique products/environment/processes. The politicians step in with a definition of minimums because they aren't being met.
