Travel around the world for FREE!

Probably is not such a new idea, but I still consider it worth spreading.

As you can see from the title the idea is about how to travel the world for free, no schemes involved :)

I am doing that since the 16th of March 2013 and it works.
Basically I am hitchhiking from one place to another, and to get food and a place to sleep I am trading my work. Usually I find hosts on a website(www.helpx.net) , but there are other websites as well, who could have a farm, hotel, hostel, or just a regular home and need help. The work varies from farming to cooking, or from taking care of the house to teaching another language. The working hours are flexible and around 4-5 hours/day, which leaves you with enough time to visit places and meeting other people and to discover the place's beauty. Also you get days off for field trips or whatever you want to do.
When I want to visit another city or a place for a few days I am using couchsurfing to get accommodation. Again, it's free :)

The only money I spend are on drinks or other stuff that I want to buy.

So, basically if you want, you can travel for FREE!

I want to spread this idea because a lot of people think that traveling is very expensive and they don't even imagine that it could be done for free.

May 8 2013: yes, 4 hours labour, for three squares (meals) and a bed for the night, is the norm for many out on the west coast of Canada. We have a program, Katimavik which is sadly being shelved , which has a group of 18 year olds go into a community and be of service to the locals. ALL, while I've had visions of its spreading spreading around the world. in fact, with my daughter once having mentioned that she had wished take a year off before continuing her education at university, I whole heartedly support the idea of a take time out and catch wind of what this world is about before deciding what we will devote out lives to . . mine is, to live fully, in the hear and now and to tender and treat all we happen on, with a happy healing for one and all in PASSing. safe and a most awesome journey my friend. .

      May 13 2013: Hi Renessa!
I am glad to hear that there are more initiatives like this around the world. Too bad that there, on the west coast of Canada, the program is being shelved... maybe it will still be going on when I will get there and maybe I will try it, if I can :)
Yes, you are completely right about taking a year(or more) off, before deciding what to do with our lives. Unfortunately not to many people do that and they grow up and get frustrated with everything and blame everyone and everything surrounding them.
I am glad to hear that you support this idea and you support your daughter in doing this.
Thanks a lot my friend! :)

May 18 2013: my daughter is long past that now, while yes, Katimavik is being shelved. . hopefully reactivated when the next government is voted in.
This said, while I have never asked as such, I've been numerous times on a ferry out west with young people on them and they are invariably heading to a farm for a couple of weeks, so hope you check into them.
The ski resorts are always hiring kids from all round the world, they are a grand central station of young people meeting from all round the world. mostly they stay the winter, they are however, expensive and it is difficult to find acommodation.
