Travel around the world for FREE!

Probably is not such a new idea, but I still consider it worth spreading.

As you can see from the title the idea is about how to travel the world for free, no schemes involved :)

I am doing that since the 16th of March 2013 and it works.
Basically I am hitchhiking from one place to another, and to get food and a place to sleep I am trading my work. Usually I find hosts on a website(www.helpx.net) , but there are other websites as well, who could have a farm, hotel, hostel, or just a regular home and need help. The work varies from farming to cooking, or from taking care of the house to teaching another language. The working hours are flexible and around 4-5 hours/day, which leaves you with enough time to visit places and meeting other people and to discover the place's beauty. Also you get days off for field trips or whatever you want to do.
When I want to visit another city or a place for a few days I am using couchsurfing to get accommodation. Again, it's free :)

The only money I spend are on drinks or other stuff that I want to buy.

So, basically if you want, you can travel for FREE!

I want to spread this idea because a lot of people think that traveling is very expensive and they don't even imagine that it could be done for free.

  • May 13 2013: Hi Bogdan,

Thanks for your great post - very useful. I'm currently researching a round the world trip with my boyfriend and would love to work en route. I'd be very interested to find out about your recommendations of websites for volunteering.

Any help you could give would be much appreciated - I hope you're having a great trip!

      May 13 2013: Hey Hannah!
You're very welcome. I am glad that it's useful.

Well here is a list of the websites with volunteer(work-exchange) opportunities that I know so far:
      http://www.helpx.net
http://wwoofindependents.org/ - here you can find a list with opportunities from the countries around the world; there are the countries that don't have a national WWOOF
http://www.wwoofinternational.org/ - the main WWOOF(World Wide Oppotunities on Organic Farms) webiste. From here you will be redirected to each national wwoof to see the opportunities. From my point of view(free travel, or as cheapest as I can) wwoof is a bit expensive, because you have to pay for premium membership for each country, exception is the wwoofindependets
      http://www.workaway.info/
      http://www.staydu.com/

On each website you have to pay a small amount of money for premium membership. I understand this and it makes sense for me. Only if you have the premium membership you can see the host's contact details. Basically those websites/ngo's have to run somehow :)

Don't get me wrong about the costs. I would pay for each website, but because usually I stay 1-2 months in each country, I consider a waste of money to pay for a membership for 1-2 years for that country.

I hope this helped. If you have questions or if you want to get in touch, contact me!

Have a wonderful and fulfilling trip!
