Should athletes be role models?

Some people say whether they like it or not, athletes are role models. If they participate in national or international sports and win, we admire them. We don’t necessarily worship them, but we think about their courage and determination when we are discouraged.

But others say it put too much pressure on athletes and it will influence their performance in their professional field.

  • Apr 25 2013: Anyone in the spotlight has the potential to be a role model, good or bad. Is expecting those in the spotlight to act like decent people too much to ask? They can't handle the pressure? Really?! I mean they are athletes, they operate under pressure all the time. Isn't that kind of what they are trained to do by their coaches? If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen, and leave your millions of dollars on the table.
