What is a company Brand and how does a company develop or add to it?

I am trying to get a better understand of Branding, anyone with marketing or Ad background with help.

    Feb 16 2011: The brand is an entity that's always evolving, like you. It's physical body is the logo design, the product design, the communication materials. It's the information people have stored in your brain about your company. Being a known brand helps you secure customers. You should be the first choice that pops into their own mind on certain criteria. Specialised companies help you define yourself and advise you on creating your brand: what brand should that be, how should it look, what traits you should promote, how to get into your customer's head, how to get a unique spot in their minds, etc. I own a sensory branding company if you need help :)
