Is the gut the key to disease?

There are more receptors in the gut that affect the brain than the entire body combined. Many researchers believe the entire immune system is affected more by gut health than all other systems in the body. They believe that all diseases, including autism, stroke, autoimmune diseases, heart disease, mental illness, and cancer could be dramatically reversed if more attention were paid to the gut. This would indicate that the leading cause of all disease lies in the damage to the gut. It is theorized by leading researchers that healing the gut will reverse the trend for most diseases. What are some of the damages that you think cause the most harm? How do you think the problem can be resolved? Do you believe this theory is an exaggeration? What do you believe is the core issue of healing?

  • Mar 21 2013: Deep in my gut I know the body is a system don't you? Ignoring my pun - the gut is very important, but so are many other aspects of you, your body, and your life. One of the most interesting things I've ever heard about was on NPR recently. This was the Hayflick Limit. It is 25 for humans. I read in a book on theories that this number suggests a human life expectancy of 110 years. Leonard Hayflick was at Stanford at the time of this discovery. That's the same school where some experts exspect to eventually have three hundered year old people. So I hav to wonder. I go to the cemetaries and look around and read how long famous people live. I have known some people in their nineties; I spent a year in Okinawa: and I read obituaries. There are a few people that live to 100 and even 110 - but not many. If we can avoid parasites, injuries, and infections, eat right, and have good genes, a long life may be ours. Of course, you can help but less than some imagine. Now the Baby Boom is looking at loosing five years.
