If you have NEVER been to Africa, when someone mentions "Africa" or you hear "Africa", what is the FIRST thing that comes into your mind?

People associate different regions/continent based on media, informational material, myths, stereotypes and such. The main idea of this discussion is to find out what people who never had "first hand experience" think about the continent. Thanks for your contribution.

  • Apr 12 2013: Difficult question, Mary. Northern Africa? Massive deserts, some large cities and cars . . . . . Western Africa, small villages, Africa is soooo huge it's hard to have one image of Africa. I think what most people imagine is either Congo (jungles, which is actually a smaller portion of Africa) or landscapes like those in South Africa or Botswana. I get a myriad of images. I'm in the Baltimore area, BTW, just south of the city.

      Apr 16 2013: Hey Terry
I agree with you...Africa is so big and with diverse regions and different countries. Thanks for sharing your thought and you are on point....I am in Baltimore County (Rosedale)....I am not soo good with map and direction..which part is the south of the city?
      Love< Mary
      • Apr 16 2013: Mary, if someone asked me that question I'd have to ask what part of Africa they had in mind.

I'm in Pasadena, in Anne Arundel County, about halfway between Baltimore and Annapolis (actually a tad closer to Annapolis).

Thanks for a great question! a thought-provoking one.

        Blessings
        Terry
      • Apr 16 2013: I also want to mention, Mary, that there is a restaurant in Baltimore that is offering Ethiopian/African cuisine. Eden's Lounge - haven't tried it yet but will soon and will let you know.

          Apr 17 2013: Hey Terry,
I have been to Annapolis and Anne Arundel mall....
Thanks again for replying....I will be more than willing to meet with you for some Ethiopian food. I have tried "Injera and meat"....it is great

NB/ I totally agree with you that Africa is big and so diverse with some regions having particular similiarities.
          Love, Mary
