If you have NEVER been to Africa, when someone mentions "Africa" or you hear "Africa", what is the FIRST thing that comes into your mind?

People associate different regions/continent based on media, informational material, myths, stereotypes and such. The main idea of this discussion is to find out what people who never had "first hand experience" think about the continent. Thanks for your contribution.

Apr 11 2013: Like I said thts the first thing that come to my mind, and I think if a lot of other posters were honest that would be the case for them as well or some other equally pop media image. I was with the crowds that marched to boycott companies doing buisness with south africa before the fall of apartied, I have an awareness of the extent of the damage that aids has/is/will do their I know africa is a continent and not a country which is more sadly than many people from the usa do. I know that the kingdom of etheopia was a n advanced christian kingdom when found by the europeans who rounded the cape, I know that the human race began there and that its a place where the people and cultures can be welcoming harmonious and proud but that like other places that pride can become perverted into hate and war. I would like to visit alot oftheworld someday and yes Africa ia high on my list maybe we can establish a ted community hostel system where people from other parts of the world can crash for a few days at a membershouse and that way cut the cost of travel.

Apr 16 2013: Thanks Russell for sharing your in depth thought....It is great to read your insight in relation to South Africa apartheid. Thanks for confirming and educating one or 2 people that Africa is a continent..... And the Ethiopia fact ( I am new to the fact that human life began in Africa...I will be reading that very soon)
Oh my God, I just love your idea of establishing COMMUNITY HOSTEL SYSTEM...it is just brilliant.. pitch the idea I and so many other will definitely support it..You are so welcome to visit Africa....
African need to be innovative and responsible for their own well being...aid/funding never made any one rich...
      Love, Mary
