If you have NEVER been to Africa, when someone mentions "Africa" or you hear "Africa", what is the FIRST thing that comes into your mind?

People associate different regions/continent based on media, informational material, myths, stereotypes and such. The main idea of this discussion is to find out what people who never had "first hand experience" think about the continent. Thanks for your contribution.

  • Apr 3 2013: Freedom! Same freedom you get when you get on the motorcycle or when the rain is pouring and you get soaked up, but still love it. Of course, lions, zebras and hypos also come to mind, but overall it's freedom.

      • Apr 7 2013: Hey Mary,
Sorry for getting back so late.
I think of freedom because more or less in my mind Africa has been left out by our so-called modern society norms and rules. Not to say there are no rules, it's just that our society has rules that govern pretty much every single aspect of life and very little is left in terms of wilderness (not only natural)
. See, people are so dependent on these rules and norms that they are completely incapable of existing without them and this is scary. It's like a prison, only that the bars are invisible...

          Apr 10 2013: Hey Spas,
          Thanks for replying once more.
I totally agree...the modern systems has yet to catch up with Africa...Having lived in both Kenya and US...I would say rules US to me feel like a robotic system....work...pay bills....while in Kenya...one can comfortably live on less money and have fun...however both systems have pros and cons.....
And yes it is scary when people become dependent and get caught up in the system....
          Love, Mary
