If you have NEVER been to Africa, when someone mentions "Africa" or you hear "Africa", what is the FIRST thing that comes into your mind?

People associate different regions/continent based on media, informational material, myths, stereotypes and such. The main idea of this discussion is to find out what people who never had "first hand experience" think about the continent. Thanks for your contribution.

  • Apr 6 2013: A landscape full of beautiful animals and nature, a foreign land that is like none other, and people I have never met with traditions, cultures and perspectives that I am longing to learn from.

I didn't have to think much about my answer after I read your question, but for some inexplicable reasons I feel like there's an impending alternative at the back of my head. I think you're making a great point here, though. It is true that people associate different regions in this world solely based on media, stereotypes, etc without having had that "first hand experience". I think it's quite absurd because speaking in terms of stereotypes - their factual standpoints are limited.

      Apr 9 2013: Hey FNU,
Yes beautiful place full of great experiences that you should not postpone anymore to learn more about and to share your experiences....
I totally agree with your view that majority associate different region based on media..and it is quite stereotypical...and gauging from the replies I am getting..majority of people view Africa as a "dark continent"...just the way the media has made them believe....so you are right....
I think this means that if the media was to share the positive side of Africa, then people will start seeing Africa as this great continent....
      Love, Mary
