If you have NEVER been to Africa, when someone mentions "Africa" or you hear "Africa", what is the FIRST thing that comes into your mind?

People associate different regions/continent based on media, informational material, myths, stereotypes and such. The main idea of this discussion is to find out what people who never had "first hand experience" think about the continent. Thanks for your contribution.

  • Apr 4 2013: The first thing that comes to my mind when I hear Africa is::
2)Poverty stricken people dying from AIDS
    3)Tribes living in huts
4)A race of people that dislike African Americans
    5)Shaka Zulu
    7)Women with phenomenal bodies
    8)Conflict Diamonds
    9)Rebel forces terrorizing helpless villagers
10)That damn commercial asking you to donate $$$ to help feed a hungry child that comes on late night

I KNOW my thoughts are influenced by the representation created by the media here in America! It's offset by Africans that I've met personally here in America & from what I've read in books & magazines! I believe the continent has received a more negative wrap which overshadows the true greatness of the place! I hope that one day I actually get a chance to visit the homeland of my ancestors so I can experience all the greatness it has to offer myself!!!

    SN: Mary you're BEAUTIFUL!!! :-)

Apr 5 2013: Hey Emanuel,Thanks for taking your time and sharing your thoughts....Thanks for complimenting Mama Africa about her beauty...lol (I appreciate your compliement)
      1) Yes Africa is the mother of wonderful, amazing wildlife....all people should make it to Africa to witness the untold beauty
      2) Yes Africa has the hightest AID rate compared to the rest of the world. However this does not mean all people are infected, the great news is that the rates are going down.
      3) Hahahahahah.....this made me laugh...yes there are still tribes living in huts..amazing how they have preserved their culture.
      4) Sigh:) I can identify with you...this is a stereotype...Africans and African Americans need to embrace each other. The hatred is artificial and skin deep. When you get to know someone people get along so well.
      5) Yaaaah....Big up South Africa
      6) Slavery...somewhat long gone but the effects are still there especially mental damage
      7) Hahaha....need not to comment
      8) Rich in natural resources, yet poor economically....who is the chicken now? We need to recognize truth
      9) It is painful to see fellow African raising against each other
      10) Hehehe...I have nothing against the commercial, though I have something against the media, it is time to show the great, positive, healthy and able AFRIICA.
      Love, Mary
